Have some problem with a hard disk of mine with WinXP OS installed. SP3 patched.
One fine early morning started my computer with ethernet cable connected to internet but after i finished brushing my teeth realised that the computer hanged. mouse keyboards all not working basically the whole comp was like retard. Forced shutdown with power button and resitted my sata cables and pci-e graphics card slot. Usually it solves such problem once in months.
Comp still cannot boot into OS then. Worse BIOS cannot even load. So decide to use 'r' function available in OS disc to write a new boot sector for proper bootup and into OS again. Now due to repeated failed bootup and my LCD screen going black i ggot the following message after mounting my OS cd into my optical drive
Line 4221 (another time 2973) of the INF file \i386\textsetup.sif is invalid, setup cannot continue press any key to exit .. .
also when i first realised my comp irresponsive after i brush my teeth and did my first reboot there was a flash of a blue screen. It when off so fast that i cannot see the details in a flash.
Anyway to set the computer so that in the event of any blue screen of death the error message can at least stay on for the reader to take down the details? I beleive there can be some seting to adjust somewhere in BIOS or something.
Thanks gurus here in advance.
A lesson learned: Don't brush your teeth when you switch on your Windows PC. :-)
I wonder why people are still clinging on to an outdated OS when the new one is out. Could this be a ploy that force people to upgrade by creating problems with the patches?
Unless you need Windows for some special programs, switch to Linux/OS X will save you lots of trouble.
If cannot go bios, then nth much can be done.
Try using the HDD on another computer and see what happens
There always are probelms with the patches...i always off windows update as soon as i get a computer.
If you cannot enter BIOS, likely your mobo/CPU GG liao. BSOD would probably indicate hardware failure.
Do you have another set of components to test it out? CPU, mobo etc?

Seems to me that your memory is faulty.
Try removing all your memory and run with only one memory installed, do this with each different memory if you encounter error while reloading your windows.
See how it goes first ok?
BSOD also means not enough voltage...if you do overclocking.
Even if memory faulty also should be able to at least go into BIOS.
The problem could be with any component...test with another computer then report back.

Wow off windows updates! not all the updates bad lah. when i get another setup i will use the hdd, hope it will not cause the other mobo to go retard again : (

I am using the same hardware eveything to make this post via internet. the only different thing ia my hdd. the one suddenly when retard was a maxtor. this one's a seagate. both same grade sata2. No my ram, mobo, gf car, psu, optical drives no issue. i understand you concern about BSOD, it should relate to hardware or recent updates software crash or something.

No OC-ing, all my hardware were never OC-ed, never forced to stress to the changing of voltage extend.
Two things i hope people can help.
(1) how to force the blue screen to saty on so that details of error message can be read or recorded don at least on paper.
(2) Now my retard hdd cannot read my winXP disc with the Line 4221 sheet thingy. Anyway to work around that? so that at least the OS disc cna be read and maybe a new boot sector can be writte, windows repaired and any format options can aat least be accessible.
All my software OS and hardware bought first hand, no pirated or poor grade items. Thanks.

Can you access the contents of the Maxtor? And can you now access BIOS? Some BIOS have the option of fast boot (Like mine) Split second then boot already. Want to enter BIOS, must time the button press. Or spam the moment you press the power button.
If you can access the Maxtor via the Seagate's XP, scan the Maxtor for bad sectors using HD-Tune.

What do you mean?
Cannot?...just off the Windows Update service.

Normally BSOD will last long enough to at least see the error.
You could check your BIOS to see if there is any related options.
U r nt pressing the right button to load the BIOS!!!!!!!

BIOS no need press button. It will load by itself. To access the BIOS setting options you need to press a button when computer initial startup. Otherwise how i can post here ?? ?? ?? ??
Okay after some searching over internet with proper keywords i got answer to point (1)
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/32515-how-do-i-sustain-blue-screen-death.html
Point (2) need help.

Did you try out what Raraken mention on top?

Is, your PC , the same one running properly right now? since I infer from here that you are using it to post here.

(1) Right-click on your My Computer icon on desktop, select Properties, go to Advanced tab, click on Settings under Startup and Recovery, uncheck Automatically restart checkbox.
(2) Told you to check your memory already, take out all your memory, borrow a piece of memory from your friend and test it on your computer for a day and see if your problem is resolved or not.
Power problems will not give you blue screen, your computer will just reboot itself randomly. Try to unplug all your USB devices and see if it will improve the situation or not. Don't be silly and unplugged your USB keyboard and mouse.
Harddisk problems will not give you blue screen, either you will start losing your data or you cannot even boot into windows because your harddrive have already lost enough data to make your windows files not found.

Kenneth,
Yes all hardware and software OS same. Except the hdd. I can confirm its not hardware issue, sometimes probabaly due to sitting issues on graphics card but resitting them back is okay. I believe it may not be hdd issue too but rather some improper shutdown and rebboting after the blue screen causingg windows to go haywire, maybe even affecting the windows registry of something. I cannot confirm on this yet.
I just need to work around problem #2 now. Since i missed the blue screen during the first reboot i was not able to see the error message. The problem now is my OS disc just cannot run to appear in the initail setup screen where a windows repair, format options.

Are you able to see the problematic HDD in "My Computer"?
If can, right click it...under the Tools tab you'll see a box named Error-checking, click on "Check now".
If can't, the HDD could be spoilt.
If there is important data inside, you could seek professional help to recovery it.
if not, just throw it away. (Or sell to Karang Guni)
I found this expired topic which might come in handy to you.

Hi Call4ljw
Thanks for the tip. I am able to access all my files when connected to an external hdd mod case. Its my forte and i never lost any files since i first started DIY computers. Recovery of lost files cost a lot but i usually open up my hdd and destroy the platters inside before disposing off hdd properly.
