I didn't finish reading.
You say you've a Compaq. What is it using? Intel or AMD?
Do you have Windows CD? Think it should be recoverable. If no, and you've a spare computer, we can try something else.

I have installed on my PC, but I don't see any difference.........
I have no idea how I fixed the damn thing.
Booted from Windows XP CD and did a repair.
After almost 1 hour of waiting, my lappy started working fine again.
Problem is now everything runs at a doubly slow speed. (might be caused by the numerous updates I got from MS)
Haiz, but I guess better slow and working than totally fcuked.
I am not such a bimbo after all.

When HP/Compaq logo comes up
Press pause
Look under recover or smth.
then there should be "windows recovery" and "Hp recovery"
do windows recovery and go last known good configuration.
Note: the steps are correct but if u cant find "windows recovery" find something that sounds similar. cause my -- * brain's overloaded with info and this is from my memory*

Common causes of screwed up installs:
1. Protection programs active
2. Virus active
3. Users with Norton and Spyware Doctor
4. Users who have AMD PC but have Intel drivers installed and active (charlize's case)
Those who have AMD PC but have Intel drivers and are active, please see the sticky - http://www.sgforums.com/forums/2250/topics/330108
As for other methods of recovering the PC (without using Recovery Console) , please be patient while I get the instructions.

Err... that only applies to Vista? I know this configuration exists in Vista. As far as I know, I've never seen any HP machines that has such a configuration.
Recovery = reformat and re-install Windows if it's XP.
Any HP/Compaq users care to clarify or test?

Yea, It is available in vista, and in my case, my HP has it. I am for sure it have it in my HP cause I tried recovering my "spoilt" hdd via these options. One of them is to use the "windows recovery module" where, it scans and detects and fixes problems + offers you to go to the "last known good configuration" and the other is to use the HP recovery module - @ you are given the option to backup all data and programmes, but you would need a hdd/ thumb drive to store them before reformating.
It could be due to lots of reasons. Business machines with Vista Business and Enterprise have different and recovery modules ect. than Home premium
For HP compaq models - it is a HP invent screen.
For HP pavilion models - it's just HP.
I remember, recovery in Xp does too bring you back to your last known few "saved configuration too"
