these few days i've been thinking which Gcard to buy. the 8800GT, 8800GTS, ATI HD4850 or 9800GT. these cards are good, maybe except for the GT version, but cheap. so i just want to know which card provide best FPS and performance.
what is your budget?
8800GT and 8800GTS is sufficient for normal gaming
4850 is faster then the 8800gt/gts
9800GT is actually 8800 rebranded, with the 55nm chip if i am correct
I think the 4850 will perform better, go search for reviews
If i were you, i will get 4870x2, more powerful than the 9800GT, and can compare with the GTX260/GTX280
What are you going to use it for? If it's not for games or some intensive graphics processing, don't waste money and get a good card. It's not only a waste of money, it's a waste of resources.

GTX260/280 and HD4870 are different elite and cannot compared to 8800 series. I agree with you that if money is no issue then go for either the 4870 or GTX 280. I would prefer the GTX 280 but cost slightly more than 4870.

Among the cards you have listed, HD4850 would have the best performance.

If money is not an issue, everyone would have gotten a pair of HD4870X2 crossfired (essentially 4 HD4870 cards ).

yes yes, different batch
if latte kid dont really want to spend a lot of money, he can get a 3870x2 like me
but i still prefer him to get the 4870x2, think of all the possibilities!
Gaming no lag.(at least for a while)
When ppl visit you, can show off.(just what i did when i first gt my3870x2).
Looks cool.
BUT. IF you get the 4850 or 4870 or even the 4870x2, i will recommand that you wait for the ones with non reference cooling (or 3rd party heatsink). I heard tat the 48xx series runs very hot
Which of these cards support HDMI output?
lets say my budget <300 , and yes, im going to use for for "EXTREME" gaming. cause my current 8500 is so sucks, even after oc + accelerator, it stills gimme shitty 40 - 90+ fps in COD4 with low detail. *damn it sucks* and also, im plannning getting a new processor. so and it leads to another question. processor, or mobo for tight budget change? and im not really sure about AMD techs, but i heard it heat up pretty fast.
Okay, based on bell system pricing on 23 augst 08(you can see it on their website)
Asus 8800GT 512 mb is $319
Asus 9800GT 512 mb is $249
Asus 4850 is $279
saphirre 4870 is $408
Saphirre 4870x2 is $799
If your budget is around 300, get the 4850 lor. 4850 and 4870 i dun think there is a very big difference, 4870 and 4870x2 is a lot difference
Since you are going extreme, get the 4870x2 if you really have money to throw. or the 4850 is sufficient.
If you want to upgrade or change a new system...
the trend now is quadcore, maybe Q9550? I heard that the amd quadcores are not very fast
motherboard im not so sure, but i noe, if you want to run 2-4 ati amd graphics card, u need a one with intel chipset, wheraas if u wanna run 2-3 nvidia cards, u need a motherbaord with nvidia chipset
Can i know your system specs? As if you are getting a new graphics card, and you have a slow processor, everything is going to slow down due to the processor.

actually there is sth called the DVI/VGA to HDMI dongle
Reviews says that s-video does do high defination like 1080i/1080p
but for HDMI, your graphics card need to be able to decode things fast enough and send them out.
From what i know, Nvidia graphics card doesnt output sound through the HDMI port.
ATI graphics card does output sound tgt. The new 4870x2 output video and sound in 7.1 surround channel
My graphics card have an onboard HDMI, but i dun have a TV that supports HDMI
oh, cause i could find 8800 GTS selling at <200, ATI4850 <250 and 9800Gt at 170.
so quite hard decide ar.
and my comp specs are:
-Intel Pentium D 2.80 ghz
-2gb RAM
-nvidia NX8500GT
-using window XP sp3
so i planning a change in my processor. and definetely my gcard
Go for the 4850... Like MyPillowTalks said, it's quite hot... but youtube got alot of vids to show u how to cool it down... still wonder why no maker swap e default cooler for something better...
does ur motherboard support quadcore or not? if yes, does it support the new 45nm quadcores or not
Quadcores are LGA775 socket, the 6600 is the 65nm LGA775 socket
if ur mobo does not support 45nm, and u put in 45 nm processors, it is not going to run
yes, 4850 is ur choice already, because of the heat, look for the cards with 3rd party heatsink on it. my 3870x2 has professional cooling, load is onli @ 55 degress celsius. compared to the stock @ 81degress
Pentium D is dualcore right?
my old comp is athlon xp 2400+, now very outdated, graphic card is geforce 4 mx
wah MyPillowtalks , very complicated ar. i abit comp stupid. how to check ur mobo all these? how u know whether it supports or not? damn, im pretty sure my comp is dualcore. and ur heatsink, where u go it?
Im not sure lea, is your computrer custom built one?
hmm, after some googling i realise that dual core should be LGA775 socket. That means the pattern on the processor chip must fit into the pattern on the mobo
u need to know whether your motherboard supports the new quadcore processors or not. ALthough the quadcore processors use LGA775, if your motherboard supports the quadcore processors, u can upgrade, if not better not upgrade
I mentioned about the 45 and 65 nm thingy, it is the size of the processor chip, my comp is using the newer 45nm Q9450.
To check you mobo, i think u need cpu-z, downloadable from http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php there is no need to install, just open the zip file and click cpuz.exe - Yes it is free of charge
then click on mainboard at the top to see your model, after that,. u can check online and see which processor and pci slots ur mobo have.
PCI-slots - the newr graphics card like 8800-GTX280 and some other cards that will be around for a while uses the PCI-express 2.0 x16 slot
To check manually, follow this thread: http://sgforums.com/forums/2250/topics/327958
xcert and i have posted some ways to open up ur casing and check
Talking about the graphics heatsink, my graphics card comes with a professional cooling heatsink, my original one(u can see from that thread, the red one)has overheated so much that banleong changedd the one with better heatsink for me.
As for processor's heatsink, i bought asus silent knight II, very lousy, dun buy it, it looks nice onli...
And yes, if you are intending to get new graphics card, i think the 4850 minimum wattage for your powersupply is 500 watts
Looks like it is better off buying a new comp
I am using X48 motherboard
ai ya nvm, i get new comp, this time im gonna go for custom build (:
How much $$ you want to throw in?
im saving for now ba, maybe try it later for 1800
Originally posted by latte kid:im saving for now ba, maybe try it later for 1800
same... but u might wanna wait though... the new i7 processor's coming out q4 this yr... might be something to look for...
but on a $1800, i dun think should get the core i7
it requires x58 mobo, which runs on DDR3, ram is expensive

Not really. There's a Kingston 2GB one going for $129 now.

9600gt most wu hua
hmmm..
but gaming comp means 4gb dual channel KIT
then must overclock, buy the 1600fsb

not as hua as 4850...... but power wise... anyways TS doesn't seem like he knows alot.... gigabyte's ep43-series mobo looks good though... currently tagging that...
