Development
Early in 2001, Singapore Technologies Kinetics, which includes the former Singapore Technologies Automotives, Ordnance Development and Engineering (ODE) and Chartered Industries of Singapore (CIS), announced that it was developing a new 155 mm/39 calibre Light Weight Self-Propelled Howitzer (LWSPH) (4 × 4). This system has been developed as a private venture by Singapore Technologies Kinetics for the export market with the first firing trials of the ordnance taking place in South Africa. The first demonstration prototype of the 155 mm/39 calibre LWSPH was shown in Singapore early in 2002 and then at Eurosatory 2002 in Paris in June. The 155 mm/39 calibre LWSPH is being developed for use by rapid deployment forces with key design factors stated by Singapore Technologies Kinetics to include: Excellent firepowerSuperior strategic and tactical air or land mobilityGood survivabilityMinimal logistics supportAs the targeted weight of the complete LWSPH system is only about 7,000 kg, the system can be transported inside of a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and can be carried slung under a CH-47 or CH-53 helicopter. The Singapore Technologies Kinetics 155 mm/39 calibre LWSPH is built around a very strong space frame type chassis with the diesel power pack and seats for at least four crew members at the front. When travelling the crew are protected by a steel frame which is swung out either side when deployed in the firing position. The driver, seated at the front right side can select either 4 × 4 or 4 × 2 drive. The 170 hp turbocharged intercooled diesel engine supplies power to the two rear radial piston motors at each wheel station. The front suspension is of the independent multilink type with hydropneumatic struts, while the rear is an independent trailing arm type with hydropneumatic struts. All wheels are fitted with disc brakes and an ABS system is fitted as standard. The 155 mm/39 calibre ordnance is mounted at the rear and when deployed in the firing system, the complete system is stabilised by two outriggers that are lowered one either side at the rear of the chassis. Maximum rate of fire is being quoted as six rounds a minute and a burst rate of three rounds in 15 seconds can be fired. Space is provided for 18 155 mm projectiles and their associated charges with a flick rammer being provided to reduce crew fatigue and maintain rate of fire. Singapore has been the origin of a number of innovative weapon programmes, not the least of which is the 155 mm Light Weight Self-Propelled Howitzer, the LWSPH, from Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK). Announced in March 2001, this has been designed for use by rapid deployment and airborne forces as it can be carried inside a C-130, the light weight (seven tonnes without ammunition) being achieved by the extensive use of titanium in the space frame construction of the chassis. The LWSPH runs on four wheels to combine agility with an operational range of about 600 km, carrying a 39-calibre howitzer. ERFB-BB is manufactured in Singapore so the LWSPH has a potential firing range of 30 000 metres. An open vehicle, the LWSPH is yet another example of a gun system that relies on high mobility to protect its crew, as it is able to move out to 500 metres in less than one minute and reach a road speed of 80 km/hour. Transportability in a C-130 goes almost without saying, but air-transportability by CH-47D and CH-53 is certainly an unusual feature for this category of gun. Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK) has joined in the lightweight contest with its innovative 155 mm LightWeight Self-Propelled Howitzer (LWSPH). This 155 mm system has a 39-calibre barrel, and the ordnance used in the prototype was supplied by Re Defence.
The complete LWSPH really is lightweight: for it currently weighs about 7000 kg ready to move and it is expected that, following further development, this number will be reduced even more. The LWSPH can therefore be transported in a C-130 Hercules aircraft with relative ease, or carried slung under a CH-47 Chinook or CH-53 Super Stallion helicopter.
The LWSPH travels on a 4 x 4 wheeled space frame chassis at a maximum road speed of 80 km/h and has a range of 30,000 metres firing Extended Range Full Bore Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) projectiles of local manufacture. Rear-located recoil spades are deployed to assist platform stabilisation during firing. The LWSPH is still in the prototype stage but has already aroused a great deal of interest, especially from Italy where Otobreda has announced that it is to join STK in developing a variant with a 155 mm 39-calibre barrel designed by Otobreda.
