Development
Early in 2001, Singapore Technologies Kinetics, which
includes the former Singapore Technologies Automotives, Ordnance
Development and Engineering (ODE) and Chartered Industries of Singapore
(CIS), announced that it was developing a new 155 mm/39 calibre Light
Weight Self-Propelled Howitzer (LWSPH) (4 × 4). This system has been
developed as a private venture by Singapore Technologies Kinetics for
the export market with the first firing trials of the ordnance taking
place in South Africa. The first demonstration prototype of the 155
mm/39 calibre LWSPH was shown in Singapore early in 2002 and then at
Eurosatory 2002 in Paris in June. The 155 mm/39 calibre LWSPH is being
developed for use by rapid deployment forces with key design factors
stated by Singapore Technologies Kinetics to include: Excellent
firepowerSuperior strategic and tactical air or land mobilityGood
survivabilityMinimal logistics supportAs the targeted weight of the
complete LWSPH system is only about 7,000 kg, the system can be
transported inside of a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport
aircraft and can be carried slung under a CH-47 or CH-53 helicopter. As
of late 2005 no production orders for the system are known to have been
placed.
Description
The Singapore Technologies Kinetics 155 mm/39 calibre
LWSPH is built around a very strong space frame type chassis with the
diesel power pack and seats for at least four crew members at the
front. When travelling the crew are protected by a steel frame which is
swung out either side when deployed in the firing position. The driver,
seated at the front right side can select either 4 × 4 or 4 × 2 drive.
The 170 hp turbocharged intercooled diesel engine supplies power to the
two rear radial piston motors at each wheel station. The front
suspension is of the independent multilink type with hydropneumatic
struts, while the rear is an independent trailing arm type with
hydropneumatic struts. All wheels are fitted with disc brakes and an
ABS system is fitted as standard. The 155 mm/39 calibre ordnance is
mounted at the rear and when deployed in the firing system, the
complete system is stabilised by two outriggers that are lowered one
either side at the rear of the chassis. Maximum rate of fire is being
quoted as six rounds a minute and a burst rate of three rounds in 15
seconds can be fired. Space is provided for 18 155 mm projectiles and
their associated charges with a flick rammer being provided to reduce
crew fatigue and maintain rate of fire. The overall battlefield
survivability of the system is enhanced as it can come into and be
taken out of action in less than 1 minute, so

LWSPH
Singapore has been the origin of a number of innovative weapon programmes, not the least of which is the 155 mm Light Weight Self-Propelled Howitzer, the LWSPH, from Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK). Announced in March 2001, this has been designed for use by rapid deployment and airborne forces as it can be carried inside a C-130, the light weight (seven tonnes without ammunition) being achieved by the extensive use of titanium in the space frame construction of the chassis. The LWSPH runs on four wheels to combine agility with an operational range of about 600 km, carrying a 39-calibre howitzer. ERFB-BB is manufactured in Singapore so the LWSPH has a potential firing range of 30 000 metres. An open vehicle, the LWSPH is yet another example of a gun system that relies on high mobility to protect its crew, as it is able to move out to 500 metres in less than one minute and reach a road speed of 80 km/hour. Transportability in a C-130 goes almost without saying, but air-transportability by CH-47D and CH-53 is certainly an unusual feature for this category of gun. With a crew of only three, emplacement or displacement time is under one minute. END OF QUOTE

Singapore Technologies Kinetics (STK) has joined in the lightweight contest with its innovative 155 mm LightWeight Self-Propelled Howitzer (LWSPH). This 155 mm system has a 39-calibre barrel, and the ordnance used in the prototype was supplied by Re Defence.
The complete LWSPH really is lightweight: for it currently weighs about 7000 kg ready to move and it is expected that, following further development, this number will be reduced even more. The LWSPH can therefore be transported in a C-130 Hercules aircraft with relative ease, or carried slung under a CH-47 Chinook or CH-53 Super Stallion helicopter.
The LWSPH travels on a 4 x 4 wheeled space frame chassis at a maximum road speed of 80 km/h and has a range of 30,000 metres firing Extended Range Full Bore Base Bleed (ERFB-BB) projectiles of local manufacture. Rear-located recoil spades are deployed to assist platform stabilisation during firing. The LWSPH is still in the prototype stage but has already aroused a great deal of interest, especially from Italy where Otobreda has announced that it is to join STK in developing a variant with a 155 mm 39-calibre barrel designed by Otobreda.

During my visit to Eurosatory 2002, I have admired a vehicle of an entirely new vehicle for artillery. The firm Singapore Technologies kinetics (STK), which had introduced the armored infantry fighting Bionix at Eurosatory 2000 presented in 2002 are new self-propelled guns of 155 mm.
This demonstration vehicle called LWSPH (Light Self Propelled Howitzer) is perfectly designed to follow the current trend concerning the mobility of artillery pieces and development of wheeled vehicles. The new vehicle is a piece of artillery aérostranportable and highly mobile, allowing it to be engaged in a very fast in any part of the world. The solution proposed by STK is very original, the chassis is borrowed from a truck. It has four wheels, independent suspension, which supports the front, an open cockpit with four seats, center, the engine and an ammunition box, and in the rear room artillery.
It is a 155 mm cannon. At the rear there are two spades anchor that are attached to the main room. The piece of road in a position based on the entire length of the vehicle. Ell is pointing at the height helped two verrines vertical. In firing position, the vehicle relies on the ground through a base plate below the room. The rear wheels were reported. It is possible that the same device is planned for the front of the chassis.
The engine is a diesel turbo-charged Caterpillar and Cummins 125 kW. The piece of 155 mm has a maximum range of 30 km, with the munition ERFB BB. The maximum rate of fire is 6 rounds per minute. The shooting snapshot is 3 shots per 15 seconds. The sustained rate is 2 strokes per minute for about 30 minutes. The vehicle is LWSPH air in C-130 Hercules and hélitreuillable under the CH-47D helicopter and CH-53. For now this remains a prototype vehicle and the first tests have brought on the artillery piece.

The first 155mm LWSPH technology demonstrator was completed last year and has already fired about 350 rounds of ammunition during trials in South Africa. The system builds on Singapore Technologies Kinetics' experience in the design, development and production of the 155mm FH-88 and, more recently, 155mm FH-2000 towed artillery systems.
A key design feature of the 155mm LWSPH was that it could be carried internally in not only a C-130 Hercules aircraft, but also a CH-47 or CH-53 helicopter. The complete system makes extensive use of advanced materials and, without ammunition, weighs only 7,000kg. It takes one minute to come into or be taken out of action. Firing a ERFB BB (Extended Range Full Bore Base Bleed) projectile, a maximum range of 30km can be achieved with a burst rate of fire of three rounds in 15 seconds.
