KUALA LUMPUR: Three Malaysian Navy ships are on their way to the Middle East to provide security cover for Malaysian ships sailing the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden.
A Malaysian Navy frigate, KD Lekiu, and a support ship have reached the Maldives and are heading to the gulf while a third ship – KD Pahang – will leave Malaysia soon for the Gulf of Aden.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that an unspecified number of soldiers from the navy, army and the air force aboard the three ships would be tasked to protect the five vessels of the Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Bhd (MISC) now sailing in the pirate-infested area.
The ships were also carrying several helicopters with them, he told reporters after receiving food parcels and cash donations from various organisations for members of the Armed Forces at the Defence Ministry here at a ceremony attended by Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, who is president of Members of the Association of Ministers and Deputy Ministers Wives (Bakti).
Najib was commenting on the hijacking of two MISC ships – the Bunga Melati Dua and Bunga Melati Lima – and kidnapping of their crewmen, including 65 Malaysians by Somali pirates off the Gulf of Aden last week.
The kidnapped crew were safe according to latest indications and the authorities were in contact with those who had seized the MISC ships, he said, but declined to say more for fear of compromising the negotiations.
Najib said there was no necessity for Malaysia to inform the United Nations (UN) of its intentions to send its fleet there but he would touch on the situation in a speech he would present at the UN in New York on Sept 29.
Go Malaysia..........kill the Somali terrorist bastards........just like you did the last time during the "Black Hawk Down" incident..... ......
As for Singapore Navy.......I say you are a joke........you are the best in SE Asia, but you lack the political will to fight.....not like the Royal Malaysian Navy who dares to go Africa even.....
noted with thanks.
I thought the Malaysians send their ships as the terrorists to terrorise the Somalians??
We protect our stuff need to tell you all meh?
And why the heck would our stuff be found at Aden there?
erm.. hello? sgForums...? it's not myForums...
News reports that the Malaysian forces on board the ships include their crack Commandos.......
Will anyone deploy Commandos just for routine patrol duties? nah...... They are preparing for a fight, and Singapore should join them.
Now why is Singapore so quiet? One of the ships held hostage was actually coming to Singapore.....
Singapore SAF damn useless lah, as usual......no bolls to make decision.....

Singapore is involved because Singapore is part of the 5 nation Defence Treaty. If Malaysia fight, Singapore must support them.....
Otherwise don't sign treaty.
Singapore chicken ah?

Anyway what were the MISC ships doing without any escorts in pirate infested waters?
SAF is kiasee.....which would have been good.
So.....Malaysia was waiting for something to happen? Then announce that commandos would then be on their way so that the pirates' balls would supposedly shrink?

Report from BBC on the situation in Somalia :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7600177.stm
The seas off Somalia, close to busy shipping routes, have some of the highest rates of piracy in the world. The country has been without a functioning central government for 17 years and has suffered from continual civil strife.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said the ships being deployed would provide protection for five MISC Berhad vessels, and would not launch rescue operations.
Counting ships
Officials in the semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland say the ships are being held at the port of Eyl, a lawless outpost controlled by gangs.
Puntland's minister for mines, who is leading a delegation to investigate the hijackings, told the BBC Somali Service from a hill overlooking the port that he could count eight captured vessels. He said another two were reported to be on their way to Eyl.
The delegation had spoken to local elders, he said, but it had not approached the pirates. The latest vessel to be hijacked was an Egyptian ship which was reported missing on Thursday. Earlier this week a French sailing boat with two crew was seized. Pirates holding that boat are reportedly seeking a ransom of more than $1m (£0.56m).
Puntland's ports minister said after the capture of the French boat that pirates in the region were well-armed and employ a lot of people. He said there was little co-ordination between those trying to tackle them.
In June, the UN Security Council voted to allow countries to send warships into Somalia's waters to tackle the pirates, but the ports minister complained that international vessels "don't intervene".
Where is the coalition of the willing to kick some pirates ass ?
Malaysian Naval Commandos now near Somalia......I hope they land and kill all the Somali pirates.......
KUALA LUMPUR: Hope has sprung anew for the families of the 63 Malaysians held hostage in Somalia as three Royal Malaysian Navy vessels arrived in the region.
The Malaysians are among 191 hostages held by Somalian pirates since July 20. The pirates had hijacked at least nine ships in recent weeks.
RMN chief Admiral Datuk Abdul Aziz Jaafar said the ships were well-equipped with armaments and personnel to receive the hostages when they were freed.
"This includes providing them first aid, water and food. Our mission is also to escort the MISC Bhd vessels home once the episode is over," he said, adding that they were ready for any eventuality.
Pirates seized palm oil tanker Bunga Melati Dua in the gulf between Somalia and Yemen on Aug 19. A Filipino sailor was killed.
Ten days later, Bunga Melati Lima was hijacked in the same area. The pirates have reportedly demanded a RM10 million ransom for the two ships and their crew.
Aziz said hijacking was a major threat unlike before when only robberies occurred.
The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) identified four main piracy gangs operating in the trade route, which links the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal, where commodities like oil, grain, iron ore and timber are shipped.
The gangs, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and high-powered boats, are from the Somali Marines, the National Volunteer Coast Guard, the Marka Group and the Puntland Group.
Led by warlord Abdi Mohamed Afweyne, the Somali Marines are the most powerful in the impoverished region which has a 3,025km coastline.
