Are Singaporeans very status concious

I remember reading one forum about whether is it wise to sign on at this moment of time as the gal told the forumer that her BF will be signing on as a technician in the SAF. One particular lady told that all a lot of factors must take into consideration blah blah blah....
Later this lady mentioned "Why sign as a Technicans where people will give U that type of strange look, mustv sign as an officer mah!!!"
This gives me an impression that locals are very status conscious. They scared of "ma-lu" etc. I find that in Singapore, if U are holding a low position in an organisation, U will more or less be look down -- some sort like your kid is in EM3 & very ashamed like that!!!
I feel really sian that the locals are having this type of mentality.
Care to comments on your encounter in this issue? -
well i guess ppl are affected but wat they see and read in the papers..
well its seems that only the officers get the credit and glory..
while it is the lower positions held by various ppl that contribute and get the job done..
really hate the mentality of those who know nothing.. -

in every organisation and society there will be hierarchy. it does not mean only people at the top r important. without the people below supporting the people at the top, how can the people at the top survive?
so wats wif the looking down on technicians and the status?
or mabbe she meant the guy shud try sign on as officer first? i hope.
anywayz tt is y i always thought everyone in saf is important, the clerks, the drivers and all. and not tt if u become one of these vocations during nsf u learn nothing and contribute nothing and waste time - absolutely not true. -

Yes, if given a choice, a gal will not choose/or even think of getting a BF who is of lower position in an organisation as they feel ma-lu when introducing her BF to her friends during group gatherings etc.
If her BF is an Engineer/manager..then it is OK..Get the picture now?
Yes, that's why I can conclude something
1. If a gal is a poly graduate, the min criterion she will go for is that guy's qualification is a Diploma or higher.
2. It would be best that the guy owns a car... I have a friend who told me this story: There is an admin Staff in his company & she is chased by an Ah Beng who owned a car. After few tries, the gal agree to be that Ah Beng's GF. My friend concluded that so long the guy has a car, it will naturally make things easier --- get what I mean?
3. Out of 5Cs, the guy must have at least 3 --- Credit Card, Cash, Car/Career or better.
One thing I wanted to ask U guy --- isn't our life too stressful. Agree with me?
That's why local gals are ma-chiam hated by some guys out there who decided to venture out of this tiny red dot to Malaysia, Vietnam for their happiness.
The only reason why I can think of is bacause of one word --- FACE -

I agree with this statement! Team work is the MOST important force in the workforce today. Without a team it's hard for an organization to survive. If I ever know a person who simply doesn't accept my position in the society in future, I won't hesitate in walking away or choose not knowing that person at all. Firstly, he/she is ignorant and childish.
If one's mind can be easily jilted by the media such as the papers, the news or even hear-says, these people are weak-minded, and they don't have their own say about things.
I'm not discriminating them. But I really feel that they have to brush up their general knowledge, and to love people more by accepting them for who they are - especially looking into their characters, which are more important than status alone. -
From what I see from the messgaes being posted, people are lablled as narrow minded/chidish if they judged the position of another person before associating with them etc.
How come when a gal chooses a guy to be her BF/Husband, they will 1st look at
1. His educational level
2. His Position in his company
3. own a car(optional), if have the better
4. How many Cs does he had
How to explain this then?

Given 2 guy, one is a Degree holder, an Engineer, does have a car and have most Cs compared to another one who is maybe an "O" level holder, a very junior staff, does not have a car and do not have any C/ just 1 C. Which one will a gal choose? The choice is obvious right? -

it isn't the experiencing.. it's the "face" thing...
the reasons behind this is "what if other people think we.." and "what if they think we..."
so some spend too much...

i think different pple have different pt of view. as for the sign on thingy...imagine w/o those technicians..can the officers can the credit? but then, being a nsman myself, i think everybody must play their part...getting credit is another matter altogether.

erm wedding is once a lifetime dat y many ppl 1 2 make it grand n memorable? but den still it better to consider ur financial status b4 going 2 make it grand.. if u cant,den do a within budget

Okay... if any partner were to look for such criterias like those mentioned above. (i.e. holds a great job, comes from good schools, owns a Lexus, 4 to 5 Cs... etc..) This list will go on, if a person starts to be judgemental about things.
You see, relationship is not about what the person have or does not have. Love is not materialistic, and it's so foolish to just look at the status alone.
No one is perfect. A person can be high in status but low in character, or a person can also be good in character, but not so high in status wise. So, it depends on how we judge others. HOWEVER, when it come to loving a person, that will be a different situation altogether.
If you see a couple who got together just because of status or wealth, then in time, they will soon find themselves drifting from each other, if there's no love in their relationship anymore.
But to see a couple - one is rich; has status, the other is simple - loving each other for a long time... that's exceptional.
After so much of talking, it all boils down to some conclusions: If you TRULY love somebody, that love must be unconditional. *&* When choosing a partner, choose wisely without unnecessary judgements.
Last but not least, love is humble. If you "love" a person because he/she is rich or high in status just because u think u'll lose face if u go out with someone who is contradicting to your "criteria", then, it's your problem that you have to deal with lo. it's your pride that u have to deal with. Having ego or self-pride is okay, but Pride itself will kill a relationship, a marriage or a friendship. -
I agree with angel911 message(good comments) but as someone mention that we are born in this society that people will judge another person before so call "start to love" the person -- I find that it is very fake and superficial
Given this scenarios
This gal cannot accept a guy because he does not have all the conditions that the gal is looking for but one fine day this guy make his mark (have all the things) and this gal out of a sudden come back to him, will this guy still consider her? ONLY a fool will take this gal as this gal has already exposed her true self to the guy in the early days and she is NOT WORTH the effort.
People will judge U in the 1st meeting, what job U are doing, qualifications, appearance, friendly etc before making a conclusion whether want to devlope further. This is a standard process in our society
