It’s true what they say: The best things in life are free. Give your wallet a break and have a satisfying day out without spending a single cent. From rockin’ concerts to a fleamarkets, these awesome activities in Singapore promise not to break the bank.
Go museum-hopping
As a booming cultural hub, Singapore has attracted lots of inspiring art pieces and big-name museum exhibitions in recent years, from historic Southeast Asian artefacts to jaw-dropping art exhibitions by famous painters (one thing’s for sure: we won’t forget Yayoi Kusama’s exhibit at the National Gallery Singapore for years to come). The best part? Most of these museums offer free admission to locals and permanent residents. Right now we’re loving the totally immersive Story of the Forest exhibit at The National Museum (pictured top), by digital artists of the moment, TeamLab.

Tired of the city grind? Be one with nature and soak up scenic views at the many walking trails in Singapore. Our favourite hiking route is none other than the Southern Ridges trail, which is made up of a 10km trail, panoramic views and plenty of lush foliage for you to breathe in fresh air.

Sure, Singapore’s a tiny city, but that doesn’t mean we’re always keen on walking to our next destination – and who fancies being packed in like sardines on the train or bus? On weekends, our preferred mode is bicycle. Right now we’re a fan of Singapore’s bike-sharing services– Saturdays and Sundays you’ll typically score free rides all day, or promotions during happy hour.

Pack a picnic basket with all the kitchen essentials you already have, or if that proves too much of a fuss, order in with the help of gourmet delivery services like Deliveroo, and Ubereats. Brightly lit Singapore isn’t exactly ideal for stargazing. But with the help of sophisticated telescopes at the Singapore Science Center’s Observatory, you’ll be able to see the brilliant constellations that watch over the lion city. Its winning location next to the Equator allows viewers to view constellations in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

You read that right. Here’s the biggest (open) secret in the city’s flea market scene: the Singapore Really Really Free Market (SRRFM). It’s the stuff of dreams for vintage collectors and market lovers – all goods and services here are not for sale. Whether you’re picking up old CDs, shirts or having your fortune read, everything is literally costless. If you’re up for sharing your items (or skills even!), you’re more than welcome to peddle them — no registration or fees necessary! But be gracious and show some restraint; don’t go hogging everything, now!Catch a concert
You don’t have to shell out hundreds of dollars to catch a live performance. Performing arts venue Esplanade regularly hosts awesome acts by local talents every weekend. The shows, which are usually held at the stunning waterfront theatre or indoor concourse space, ranges from classical folk music to soulful jazz. One memorable performance we can’t quite forget at the Esplanade is the soulful set by Linus Hablot. We’re still swooning.

Despite the many swanky clubs with sky-high entry fees in Singapore, you’d best believe that you can can party for free here. Follow the cool cats at Sideshow for updates on their free gigs, like Sunday on the Hill at Kult Kafe, for booze, party jams, and hearty burgers. Don’t miss out on the street festivals either – take this month’s Urban Ventures Street Party. It’s a day long of extravaganza of live performances by local acts, with a drag queen fashion extravaganza, and a fleamarket. -
