Hazy conditions to persist on Monday: NEA
SINGAPORE: Prevailing winds are forecast to blow from the southeast or south on Monday (Oct 19) and hazy conditions are expected to persist, according to the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In an advisory on Sunday, NEA said the 24-hour Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) for the next 24 hours is “expected to be in the low to mid sections of Unhealthy range, and may enter the high section of the Unhealthy rage if denser haze is blown in”.
“Reduced visibility is also expected if PM2.5 concentration levels remain elevated,” NEA added.
The haze in Singapore on Sunday was due to the haze from Sumatra being "blown in by the prevailing weak soutehrly winds". A total of 58 hotspots were detected in Sumatra.
“Parts of central and southern Sumatra are still affected by moderate to dense smoke haze, and some of the haze has spread to the Straits of Malacca and the sea areas south of Singapore,” said NEA.

Environmental experts predict that the blanket of haze in South East Asia is expected to continue until next year as Indonesia is unable to put out the raging forest fires on time. ASEAN members are putting increased pressure onto Indonesia who failed to put out the fires and now face more hot spots in eastern Indonesia.
Indonesia officials and analysts estimating the haze will last until early 2016, with some even speculating persistent haze till March 2016.
Although the wet season is expected to arrive, El Nino dry conditions are hindering man-made efforts to control the fires. NASA satellites detected 1729 hot spots on Wednesday, more than any single day in the past 2 years.

Haze, visibility may deteriorate on Thursday: NEA
SINGAPORE: There is a possibility of some deterioration in haze and visibility conditions if denser haze is blown in on Thursday (Oct 22), said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In its advisory on Wednesday, NEA said the 24-hour PSI for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the low to mid-sections of the Unhealthy range, and may enter the high end of the Unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in.
The agency added that it had been hazy in Singapore on Wednesday "with a slight deterioration in the haze and visibility conditions in the afternoon", "due to haze from the surrounding region being blown in by the prevailing south-easterly winds".
As of 5pm on Wednesday, the 24-hour PSI reading was 108-121, which is in the Unhealthy range. NEA also said that 166 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on the same day.
Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, NEA advised that healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. Elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise such activity, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it altogether.

Slightly hazy conditions expected on Friday: NEA
SINGAPORE: Slightly hazy conditions can be expected on Friday (Oct 23) as the prevailing winds are forecast to continue blowing from the southeast, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In an advisory, the agency said that the 24-hour PSI for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the high end of the Moderate range, but may enter the low end of the Unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in.
A total of 37 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on Thursday, NEA said. It added that the haze situation in Singapore improved on Thursday as the prevailing southeasterly winds helped to keep denser haze from the surrounding region away.
