Air quality for Wednesday to remain in Unhealthy range: NEA
SINGAPORE: Slightly hazy conditions are expected on Wednesday (Oct 14), with “prevailing winds forecast to remain weak and blow from the east or southeast”, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Tuesday.
Thundery showers are expected in the late morning and early afternoon on Wednesday, while the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) is expected to be in the low to mid sections of the Unhealthy range.
There was a slight deterioration in the haze and visibility conditions on Tuesday. NEA said this was “due to the haze from our surrounding region being blown in by the weak prevailing winds”. Current conditions are expected to persist for the rest of the day.
A total of 62 hotspots were detected in Sumatra on Tuesday. Some of the moderate to dense haze in southern and central Sumatra “spread to sea areas southwest of Singapore”, said NEA.
In order not to add to the pollution during the haze period, one temple in Hougang has cut down the number of urns from 12 to eight to reduce incense smoke generated on its premises. It is also clearing joss sticks more frequently.
"Compared to previous years, we have reduced about 40 per cent of the urns so that there will not be so much smoke, (and it will be) more environmentally-friendly and hygienic," said chairman of the Taoist Federation (Singapore) Tan Thiam Lye. "In this way, we also won't have to worry about the artefacts getting damaged."
Tuesday is also the first day of the annual Kusu Pilgrimage to Kusu Island.
Ferry operators said almost twice as many devotees headed to the island compared to the previous year, despite the prolonged hazy conditions. Operators said the opening of the Marina South Pier MRT station late last year has made it more convenient for visitors to Kusu Island.
The pilgrimage, which traditionally falls on the ninth lunar month, ends on Nov 11.

Occasional slight haze expected on Thursday: NEA
SINGAPORE: Prevailings winds are forecast to blow from the southeast on Thursday (Oct 15), and occasional slight haze can be expected, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In an advisory, the agency said that there was an improvement in the haze and visibility conditions on Wednesday "due to showers over Singapore and the surrounding sea areas in the pre-dawn hours". It added that the prevailing winds were forecast to continue blowing from the east-southeast throughout the day. At 5pm, the 24-hour PSI was 90-103, which is in the high end of the Moderate range and low end of the Unhealthy range.
NEA said that given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. It added that the elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise such activity, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it altogether.

Slight haze expected on Friday: NEA
SINGAPORE: Prevailing winds are forecast to blow from the southeast on Friday (Oct 16) and slight haze can be expected, said the National Environment Agency (NEA).
In its advisory, NEA said the weather was fair on Thursday with visibility in the normal range for most parts of the day.
"Moderate to dense smoke haze is still persisting in parts of central and southern Sumatra. Some haze from Kalimantan is observed to have spread to the sea areas southeast of Singapore," it added.
The 24-hour PSI for the next 24 hours is expected to be in the Moderate range and may enter the low end of the Unhealthy range if denser haze is blown in, said the agency.
"Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion," NEA said. It added that the elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise such activity, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid it altogether.
