SINGAPORE - People will be able to dig into 10,000 free steaks at 22 sites in Singapore's heartlands on Sunday, June 28.
In the event organised by the Australian High Commission, called 50 BBQs, up to 500 Australian volunteers will be cooking Australian steaks and chicken wings, Mr Philip Green, the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, said on Thursday.
Each BBQ will be localised by the respective community clubs, neighbourhood committees, residents' committees or schools to include additional ingredients such as performances.
The 50 BBQs initiative is the final act in Australia's 50 Bridges arts and community programme, a series of events to celebrate 50 years of Singapore's independence, and 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The two other parts are 50 Walls and 50 Performances.
In 50 Walls, street artists from Down Under will collaborate with local artists to paint murals on walls in hawker centres, Housing Board blocks and schools.
Another element, 50 Performances, will showcase puppets of various body parts and a short animation clip.
On Thursday, Mr Green also launched the 50 Bridges photo contest, which allows Singaporeans to submit up to 20 photos of either 50 Walls or 50 BBQs. The closing deadline for submission is 12pm on Aug 10.
The winning photo should capture the Australian-Singaporean relationship in a creative way, and its creator can walk away with return business class tickets for two to Melbourne.
Competition details, as well as a trail map with the full list of sites for 50 Walls and 50 BBQs, are available on on the microsite sg50oz.sg and the 'Australia In Singapore' Facebook page.
