Nestled between Telok Ayer and Amoy, this gray CBD food center will be undergoing a renovation starting Dec 1 to Feb 28, 2015. Although there's fierce competition with its nearby counterpart Maxwell Food Centre, there are a couple of stalls worth going back to before the 1,000-seat hawker closes.
With 135 stalls spanning everything from Thai to Indian-Muslim to Western, Chinese food remains the staple here. Head to Yuan Chun Famous Lor Mee stall (#02-79/80) with its snaking queues, as well as the Nasi Lemak just next door (#02-81). There's also Tai Seng Noodle House (#02-123) for solid wanton mee, and don't miss the famous fish soup stall Han Kee Fish Soup (#01-129) that isn't stingy with the fresh morsels of fish fillet.
If true blue hawker food isn't what you fancy, Singapore-style ramen A Noodle Story (#01-39) is worth hitting up. They take cues from local dishes like prawn mee and wanton mee to whip up some ramen bowls in a hae-bi (dried shrimp) and kelp broth. It doesn't stop there when it comes to variety either. Mamacitas (#01-50) is a Costa Rican stall that has dishes like arroz con mariscos, a rice dish with prawns, crabstick, mussels and a sunny side-up egg with a special tomato sauce. For your beverage needs, there's also Coffee Break (#02-78), a flavored coffee and tea stall that's been around since 1964. Much like the hip cafes around the neighborhood, they've got flavors like hazelnut, toffee and macadamia made with a blend of robusta and arabica beans.
