Wah u serious scholar la u lol. Maybe you can pioneer saying ham sup in mandarin and let me know the first ten reactions?
Not yet used that. U try someday first lor.
I won't expect great reactions because in the past and until today I have carried over terms at situations when i needed to use them such as 鉄齒 (from Hokkien th'ih-kh'i),åƒåŠ› (from Hokkien tsiah-lat),衰到è¦æ» (from Hokkien sue-kah-beh-si),黑目殼 (from Hokkien or-bak-kh'ak),陰功 (from Cantonese jam-kung), 單單打打 (from Cantonese taan-taan-ta-ta),勻純 (from Cantonese wan-tsh'oen) and I have not elicited any disapproval.
I'm sure the mainland chinese wouldn't understand that haha, not sure abt the taiwanese or hongkies.
Ok people, come on have a quick scroll thru and try. These are words extracted from 我猜,我猜,我猜猜猜, 爱 etc. See how much you really understand these shows :)

You did a very great job here, dude. I can see that you have 大好的途 in this area. You should pursue your interest.
Thanks bro. I think many singaporeans are pretty well equipped with plenty of chinese vocab....the true challenge is using those words on a daily basis in any situation. You know like.....do those words appear in your vocab as you want to speak....do they appear as and when you think?
I look forward to perfecting that. And then I will go china and earn my keep. Ha!
What area exactly you want to pursue your interest in ? That time why didn't you take your 1st degree in this instead ?

Well, wanted to study archaeology in China but was told off by elders in the family as being unrealistic. Then I studied something else more pragmatic. And after so many years, my interest in the chinese culture and language hasn't waned. I hope it's a calling.
Wa. So good so good. Archaeology is 考å¤å¸ hor? One of my interest is anthropology 人類å¸. Do you think there is any relation in these 2 fields ?
But how come u link your interest in chinese culture and language strongly with "archaeology" leh ? I could see there should be strong relation with "chinese studies" instead mah.
edit: example: i interest in anthropology only because it has relation with genetical linguistic and prototyping

Yeh dude, very closely related. And well, amongst the chinese language, history and culture, these 3 categories, I'm strongly interested in the former two. Wonder what would have happened had I pursued it back then. Then again, some years later in 2004, read in ST that there are actually singaporeans who study this in China. There were features and interviews with them.

so that means with regards to 考å¤å¸, you interested specifically in ä¸åœ‹è€ƒå¤å¸ ?
Where is the connection between 考å¤å¸ and 人類å¸ï¼Ÿ I keep thinking 考å¤å¸ is more of looking at pots, jewellery, burial, currency, buildings etc.
Whereas äººé¡žå¸ is all about looking at people's cranial structure, DNA, etc.

Eheh, so qiao, I reading an archaeological / or maybe cultural wiki article right now leh:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hmong_funeral
see whether you got interest or not.
Coz just now I was reading up on "Vang Pao ( :link)" and a link brought me to there
Oh, ya, suddenly I think got relation liao. Coz in the past when I needed to know whether there was connection between the Ainu language and the Japanese language, archaeological evidence was needed to show that Ainu belonged to the Jomon culture era whereas Japanese belonged to the Yayoi culture era, thus the connection between them was negated.
