Some songs are better sung in cantonese and some in mandarin. Even in hokkien too. I guess cantonese has more tones and sounds more melodious as compared to mandarin's four tones. I do not deny there are some good ones, but many are very narrow in their scope and I see people tend to "believe" or "think" most of the time (without some basis, I hope at least they can justify what they say, quote sources, or support their speculations). When questioned, they just take the easy way out of not replying (I term it as "coming in as a once-off event" æ‹�æ‹�å±�è‚¡å°±èµ°äº†)
Of course there are good forummers who can make discussion to a higher level. I do appreciate them. They are patient, do not flame, do not look down on other forummers, support their beliefs, justify what they say, quote sources, or use logical arguments. But in a world of Internet, this minority of people are drowned in the sea of noises. Thus the thread morphs into empty "speculations" and "beliefs".
The wonderful thing in Sgforums, is, that most people who come here, are already very open in their views, not only "Chinese linguistic wannabes". That means, they come to Sgforums because of it's News, Discussions on Social Topics, Politics etc. The Sgforummers just chance upon topics they like here (very wide), and participate in what they know. But in those "chinese language" oriented forums that already attracts a target group of people, sometimes there is a lack of Sociolinguistics but more of "beliefs" and "speculations" without justification or explanation, which is what I don't like. eg. "I believe that Hokkien is older than Teochew" or "I heard that Hainanese is the most difficult language". They are very "into" the Chinese stuffs but they do not relate it to Social, feels very closed doors. I don't like.
Not only that, in those "chinese" forums, it is usually a worldwide forum which attracts audience from all over the world. To find Sporeans there are few. The Sociallinguistics momentum in Sg has already progressed with its own individual characteristics that sometimes a linguistic person discussing Chinese from Malawi, Canada, or Taiwan can understand. Of course I can discuss standard textbook stuffs, but what for I want to discuss those when one can just go to the bookshop and buy a textbook to check for himself?
Other than that, lastly, is that many of those forum are based on the phpbb script that makes formatting of the text cumbersome. Sgforums is based on its own script and is WYSIWYG. Colours, bold, underline, links, quotes are all seen as what will appear after you post. This is the most important plus point to me.

If the above sounds like stereotype to you, it is okay. That's my answer why I like this forum's format. You can easily search many Chinese forums out there on your own in Google. Just type some keywords.

I opened this discussion thread with the main purpose of daily vocabulary enhancement and exchange. It has not been as forthcoming as I had expected. Thanks for posting your views and opinions here while sharing your weatlh of knowledge. Linguistics research is not my forte and some of it can be very technical even for the layman. Before even reading, the interest can be diminished. That's why I try my best to post vocab from popular shows that the public would watch.

Same as me too, I have lost many posts before but I just retyped again. æœ‰å¿—è€…äº‹ç«Ÿæˆ�ã€‚ In other forums the posts will poof also / when you craft email replies and click "send", this is a common issue too. It is not about your connection, it is also not about web problem with sgforums, it is more about the timeout issue that the forums and the email website that they set for the users.

You thread is forthcoming la. Didn't you notice it has gone 18 pages already in just less than 2 months? I don't think I have a wealth of knowledge yet. I am still in the progress of learning too. That's why I am also a layman like everybody else.

Which part should we move to other places? We had been discussing everything on Chinese characters right, thus everything can be used in daily conversations right?

My work on the Internet is not good lar. In real life, I have been helping people to understand faster because I can just show my articles and my books to people. On the internet, I have to scan them and also many books cannot be scanned (due to the hard cover, the book will pecah), so I cannot show people base on some more evidences.
