I didn't realise Cantonese cannot be used at many many places. Maybe your places are really special. If Cantonese cannot be used at those places, similarly I think Hokkien cannot be used too.

yeh this guy, he used different nicks, eventually got banned and would politicise every single topic lol.
Maybe hokkien is more acceptable and widely understood...even myself a cantonese, I understand basic hokkien. Most people would comprehend simple requests in hokkien. Try cantonese and you will get many puzzled looks....

But that's not my point. My point is not to popularise Hokkien or whatever. I was just proposing that we should use dialect (=any dialect that the other person can handle) as a start when we start talking to people. That means, when I speak to a Hokkien person, I use Hokkien. When I meet Cantonese person, I use Cantonese. When you meet Teochew, use Teochew. This is what I do. I do not usually use the dialect that the person is not fluent in, eg. If the Cantonese auntie decides to speak Hokkien to me, I will converse to her in Hokkien. If the Cantonese auntie decides to speak her own Cantonese to me, I will converse to her in Cantonese. Similarly, most Hainanese people now decide to speak Hokkien to people instead of their own Hainanese. But if I come to know that the Hainanese person can still speak Hainanese and is willing to speak Hainanese, I will converse to him/her in Hainanese. That's what I mean.

Hehe, as I said in my previous reply, it was my first time hearing 演示 also, so it still feels a wee bit wierd for me to use it.
After see The man who was death suggest 發表, I suddenly feel it is more closer to me leh.
So, I suggest, how about 發表會？ ★ 好�嗎？

Some of these should be from some stuffs that I have posted, but I didn't check so I can gauge myself:
塞�失馬，焉知�� - the whole phrase comes from the (during 春秋？ or 戰國？) story 塞�失馬焉知��，塞�得馬焉知��, meaning "lose not necessary mean bad thing, gain not necessary mean good thing"
å››é�¢æ¥šæŒ - come from the story on é …ç¾½ right? (cant remember clearly), I can't remember, but means "end of the road / dead end / die liao" right?
世外桃� - come from the story by 陶淵明 from 晉 dynasty "桃花�記", meaning "Shangri-la" or "Utopia"
å��è�½å«å±± - dunno come from which source, but means "not eligible to be in the 榜上有å��", not necessarily means "fail" but more to "not selected"
裹足�� - dunno come from which source, but means "being hindered (somehow mentally) and not be able to progress"
己所�慾，勿施於人 - dunno come from which souce, but means "don't do unto others which you dun wan others to do unto you"
三人行，必有我師焉 - seems to come from å”å�'s 論語 sayings (but not sure), alternative usage: 三人行，必有我一師, means "everytime when travel in threes, one will take on the role as the leader"
紙�虎 - an analogy to "scarecrow", or someone look like got power, inside no real power one, one crush will collapse
å�ƒé‡Œä¹‹è¡Œï¼Œå§‹æ–¼è¶³ä¸‹ - seems to come from è€�å�'s é�“德經 sayings (but not sure), means "all journeys start from the 1st step"

Don't feel shy using 演示...it's the proper word for it. Perhaps may sound strange among singaporeans, then in that case if you'd like, better to use 發表會.

So funny I have not heard people use the Chinese term before. For me I won't be even using 發表會, I will just use presentation and keep 發表會 or 演示 in my memory store until needed.

I didn't take pains man. I just think what I know and type here. You cannot depend on my given definitions as I have not checked them, so you need to double check on Internet or dictionary or other people first.

Amazing you can remember the full story. Alamak I need to revise. Although I briefly checked through that article after I replied your post to see how well I fared, I think your explanation better than the notes.

I think they're correct :) Those that I'm not entirely sure, will check the dictionary. Hence, will only reply to those terms that require clarification.
