The government’s pro-foreigner policy has come under siege again this time at a polytechnic forum where Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community, Youth and Sports is the guest of honor.
A male student asked Dr Vivian point-blank in the face why the government is allowing foreigners to compete with Singaporeans for job.
The feisty Dr Vivian shot back immediately:
“Would Singaporeans be willing to be taxed heavily to support the country’s ageing population in 20 years’ time? This would be the case if Singapore did not bring in foreign talent.”
Dr Vivian then proceed to placate the audience with the standard (official) reassurance that the government will continue to safeguard the interests of citizens:
“You have a birthright. Everything we do is for your long-term benefit. Foreigners are here to help make Singapore more viable and competitive and to help us create more job and opportunities but it’s all about Singaporeans.”
Dr Vivian did not elaborate more about the “long-term” benefits that Singaporeans have acquired from the government other than the mandatory 2 year National Service for Singapore males.
During the dialogue which lasted for more than one hour, Dr Vivian also answered questions on political apathy put by a group of students who proposed that a political education program, along with the continued cultivation of a media landscape would help address the problem.
Dr Vivian dismissed the students’ proposal altogether by claiming that there was no political apathy among the youths without substantiating them. He also warned against labeling youths as apathetic, saying it was “trendy” to do so.
[A classic PAP way of addressing genuine concerns of Singaporeans - by ignoring the existence of the problem in the first place!]
As the dialogue drew to a close, Dr Vivian would not fail to notice the restless and dismayed looks on the faces of some students.
The PAP government is feeling the heat from the electorate especially on some of its important long-term policies such as the massive influx of foreign talent, rising costs of HDB flats and the non-transparent nature of the way the country’s reserves are being managed.
It will only be a matter of time before Singaporeans start questioning the inherent deficiencies in the one-party system promulgated by the PAP.

You can ask this question over a million times to the pap dogs, the same answer would prevail,no use they are already programmed. The only way to overturn this programme and other programmes they are shafting down on us is to show them the way out of parliament and no compromise or else be prepared to suffer another 50 yrs.
Our children and children of our children must not be marginalised or cowed into submission to the lackeys of pap.Why make admissions to schools including secondary schs,JCs,polytechnics, even Universities such a tedious and expensive process for our pple. The foriegners are not our responsibility to educate them if and when they want to study in our schools is of choice of their own therefore they must wait for their turns.
Our gahmen is doing a very disservice to the citizens on this and alot of other very drastic changes to our lives, therefore we must not be afraid to register our unhappiness in the coming election. We must let them know we're no pushovers just becos we're quiet.Show them we're not afraid of living our lives without pap.
The coming election if ever there is going to have one is the chance for the new and younger, braver electorates to show pap the power of the younger generation.
Interesting... even with broadbased taxation, the government needs to bring in foreigners to tax. I think we are really just "paying the price" for advancing too fast. I suspect so much of our development has really cost us quite a bomb.
I guess the government has to increase population to 10 million when the majority of the targetted 6 million population grows old.
And then when the majority of the 10 million population grows old, we may have to increase the population to 15 million.
And then to 20 million.
And then to 30 million.
And then to 50 million.
“Would Singaporeans be willing to be taxed heavily to support the country’s ageing population in 20 years’ time? This would be the case if Singapore did not bring in foreign talent.”
Singaporeans receives very little Government welfare compared to the western countries. Hence Singapore is least likely to suffer from the need for increased taxation to support the aging population. Singaporeans use their CPF minimum sum, their medisave and their medishield. And if really necessary, there is always the old cardboards.
Its true that the population/ work force would shrink when we do not import more foreigners but, do we have to open the floodgates ? If the issue is merely to tackle the issue of population replacement, we should only import sufficient foreigners to replace shortage in birth rates, or at most grow at a benign rate. His reason is not justified to open a flood gate of foreigners.
Singaporeans have to bear higher cost of housing, transport and other expense due to competition of resources by foreigners and PR alike.
I guess these poly students will get a rude shock when they graduate and start working.
Then they will realise first hand why their parents have been grumbling about the government.
Imagine you at chinatown and you are surrounded with china foreigners, would you ask them to go back to their land ?
For this guy, if he see that 3/4 of the students are foreigners, what would he say ?
See ghost, talk ghost language; see dog, talk doggie words.

They are students, they should take the lead to launch protests against PAP.
That is what people did in the past.
sheer practicality in his statement
No matter how much everyone whines and tries to defend their own concept of whats fair and whats not, will anyone really take a stand?
After all the debate and arguments, will you still follow the crowd and vote for PAP, or for the opposition?
Unless someone can prove that he is capable enough to lead and start a revolution, one in which the people will be happier, chances are nothing is going to change.
Actually sinkaporeans can take a stand wan. No need to protest, just vote "responsibly" for the next 4 years. When there's a time for POWER TO THE PEOPLE. All turn nerdy, when erection over, all start to whine.
