what do ppl think about NUS being world-class? Consider the admin staff, librarians, the inflexible rules, changes so often made that they dun have time to take effect, etc. AND THE BLADDY LONG APPLICATION FORMS!!! wah lan, i remember have to fill out and write life story before they even consider you....

I don't remm abt the bl**dy long forms, but abt NUS being INFLEXIBLE, i agree wif tis two thumbs & two big toes up! it is just too bureaucratic. they only focus their efforts on the students of certain faculties coz they have more value. the other faculties are sh*t to them.
even some of my lecturers complain abt how rigid the whole system is. they dun even bother to listen to some of the teaching staff, so we students even more no need to say lah! change here & there, dun bother to inform u until last min, like when the school reopens then we will discover, ah they change tis & tat, how come we dun even know b4hand. wat diff is it compared to tat of a ancient structure of a organisation?

Bureaucratic system is inevitable. Not that I am embracing the philosophy. How liberal is good for you then? I'm sure that Unis ain't judge on whether or not they inform their students of when the term starts. Just for interest, they do have printed schedules of the major activies.
Can't say much about the rest of the system. Hasn't use much of their service so far except for the mundane registrations of modules and examinations...

Haha..world class UNI??? The building along sucks
especially the new Cultural Centre. There is no mood, no character...so lifeless. How I wish I was in one of the earlier batches having convocation at Kallang Theater!
And all the buildings around the campus are so boring, added in hap-hazardly So disorganised. Can't they employ some renowned architect to come up with a master blueplan for the campus and get some top-architects in Singapore to design the buildings that have more life in it? -

Well, the cultural centre looks better with those marble slabs on... but it's the design that is boring... Hopefully the interior will be better...*sigh* -

Hi are u from NTU? I've been to NTU and the bad thing about it is the transportation and location. As for school compound, I like the Nayang House (I thihk that's what it's called). such a nice building with a touch of Chinese...
But seriously, I find that all the buildings in NUS are not inspiring at all. How can the school expect to be a world-class uni? I think Singapore govt doesn't even dream of getting any nobel prize winners from the two unis. -
Well, NUS is NOT world class for the following reasons:
a) Bad teachers who confuse you by telling you about the controversies of a new topic, even before explaining the subject matter of that topic.
b) If you have been to LT 19 at Bizad, just look at the ridiculous angle that you must bend over in order to write on the lecture table top.
c) Many teachers are just out to get published in international journals, get promotions, and no one cares about imparting the knowledge to students. After all, the students should do 'their own readings', which defeats the purpose of going to school anyway! -
eh.. i've been to NTU too but i think it's so much more convenient to move around the ntu campus than the nus's. it's easy walking between faculties and compared to ours... wah lau... walking from the forum to the bus-stop on that stupid slope is enough to kill my calf muscles..
and most importantly, nus LT sucks...try going for a 8am lecture but the LT was flooded and blackout was resulted. the following week, the same lecture had it's ohp system down.. and i'm talking abt 8am class!!!! (by the way, the LT i'm talking abt is LT 23 in science) -
Basically, I dun think NUS will become a world-class uni in the next 5 years, whatever any survey might say...
Average teachers who are not committed to imparting knowledge... average facilities... Not all teachers are that bad, but most are -
Well, from my personal experience, NUS Lecturers are very (relatively) dedicated to undergraduates alredi (i used to think they are not too). Really. Overseas, the lecturers REALLY SUX, they dun give a gamn about undergrads, when you got questions to ask them outside lecture, they can tell you in your face "sorry I am not free".
Overseas Uni like those in the States and UK are more focused on postgraduates.
And NUS exam papers do have standard, at least for my faculty. -

which fac are u from? Being in NUS, I get the feelings that the lecturers are obliged to answer the queries we have after lecture/tutorial because they are paid to do so. I find the tutors more dedicated as compared to lecturers. This is especially so for tutors who are still pursuing a course. -

True, they are paid. But they are being paid a lot more in their industrial projects and researches which they earn by commissions. And each lecturer has to produce 5 journals each year, otherwise kenna kick out. So they are actually not very free to tok to undergrads. Hence I really appreciate their effort cos I am that kind of person who bo liao bo liao go see lecturer one. I even go to their office to chit chat !
And frankly, they are already very helpful. In UK, *sigh*, wait long long. Undergrads are NOTHING to them, not interested ah! Only a few good ones will help you. But most of the time, they leave you to die. Their notes also ! Alamak ! I thot NUS worse enuff liao !
The tutors are better cos they are younger, understand our problems and they need our appraisals to promote *hehe* Also, they dun have "outside" assignments. Hence tutoring is their "full-time" job.

Not that NUS cannot become world-class uni, but it takes more effort and leadership and I dun think next 10 years possible. Maybe Singaporeans think overseas uni is better...

It is not the policy or system that went wrong, it is the bloody people who go wrong and keep on doing the circle .. round and round without make it a point to figure it out what shld be done and what shlnt be done in an organisation such as a higher learning instition.
No brain .. no brain ... too conservative when there is no such need ... but too open-minded(wild like ang moh qwee) in inappropriate time slot of the year!
Change the system if you dun like it .. to the better of course and must be honest to ownself.

and the modular system mean that i can't make close friends in uni since my classmates are changing all the time...though it gives me the opportunity to graduate earlier... -
the 1st article i couldn't remember but on sun, 19/03/00, there's another one regarding those medical students wearing black during the re-exam in silent protest..
can't believe it... really embarrassing... even my friends over at ntu are laughing at us over this incident... -
At least they didn't just take it silently... If not the admin think we students very nice to bully... Maybe we should stand up regarding the CAP system... keep on changing one...

And what now? NUS has invested in Hitatchi Towers while students are still compelled to sit in discomfort.
As regards the modular system, even tho I come from a fac that does not embrace the modular system, I dun have that many frens :p
