I'll soon be coming to Singapore to study at NUS in July and I thought people here spoke English. No offense but reading these forums people blatantly don't.Is it really that tough to speak real English, I'll never cope with this!

u want to blend into the environment here, u have to learn singlish..or at least...accept singlish...

im sure ur culture (wherever u are from) got teach u about treasuring ur roots...

If you want a place where people speak standard english, go some one else
. And if your criterion of judging whether a country's people speak standard english is through a forum, you have made a terrible choice. Maybe you should go to the English Department of Arts and Social Sciences and and my God Father Uncle Wee will teach you a thing about appreciating Singlish. -

i was wondering how come the thread starter did not reply after the first post..
anyway, i may want to extend his thought further... while i understand and actually adore singlish as part of our culture there is certainly much more to be desired when it comes to the proficiency of singaporeans in the english language.
it's just too easy to "blame" it on singlish... the basics like grammer, spelling and vocabulary of many singaporeans are sub-standard.
whether the standard of english is good or poor in singapore (or any other country) is not up to me to criticise. but i want to make a point clear. do not be proud of speaking/writing poorly and rely on "singlish" culture as an excuse for not improving your language skills.

i agree with joho...
singlish is a culture.. but not an excuse to the low standards of english.. it just seems so funny when a lot of improper english can be directly translated in to chinese...
think it is acceptable when we add a "lor" or "lah" in our sentence..
thats more to singlish..
rather than saying things like :"i go home then i call you" instead of "i"ll call you when i reach home".....
and though my level of english is not sky high...
singaporeans should be aware that standard english is better than sub standard singlish....

no i've graduated from an overseas uni. i guess it is stressful and stuff.. but i have a feeling that it's much more stressful here than overseas.. but i dunno about the quality of students that the university puts out.
i really think that the quality of a student does not depend on the institution but rather the student him/herself. i'm of course talking about respectable unis lar..
sometimes the angmohs in the overseas unis can be more interesting when they talk.. it's GENERALLY accepted that angmoh's can speak with more flair and humour than chinese. however u get ULTRA boring and stupid lecturers there to.. machiam like you should be teaching the lecturer rather than the other way round!
i'm working now.. miss uni life back in australia. enjoy it while it lasts!! and make more frens and widen your network, this is the time to really start networking as you will need them when u start working. not that u are using them next time that's why u wanna get to know them now, but becos nowadays, it's sometimes not wat u know but WHO u know.. -

really hate the kind of feeling when i have to do project with strangers.. and everyone tok to each other for the sake of the project..
and after the project discussion, a bye bye and everyone will pretend not to know each other the next time they met in the canteen..
so sad right??
anyway .. envy you for getting a chance to study and live somewhere out of singapore.. at least can get to see more about another country right?? so fun...

i'm sure u do get pple who as u say, meet and talk for the sake of the project and after that it's see u later and have a good life. i guess it's no choice who u meet but u certainly have a choice as to who u choose to be frens. hopefully the pple that u meet generally are "good enuff" to be also considered as frens.
well i do believe that i learnt alot while overseas. i guess that's an opportunity that my parents created for me. don't worree, i'm sure you will get ur chance, maybe not now while u are studying but who knows, when u start work u may be posted overseas for a year or so (but at that time u may not want to go anymore?).
well study hard.. as u urself said, once u start work it's gonna be really shit! -

generally, singlish doesn't equal to bad english.
like mentioned above, many singaporeans use that as an excuse. i am proud to say that my english is good, but i definitely use singlish alot. more so when i speak, but sometimes also in writing. in this post i believe i will refrain from using any form of singlish.
in a way, u are right, singlish is a slang of english, since i believe the bulk of the words are actually english words. i don't know how it originated, but i have a strong suspicion that it was because many of us speak many languages and/or dialects. hence over the years things get a bit muddled and out comes our singlish!
the main thing is to know when to use singlish and when to use english. the sad fact is that many singaporeans not only use singlish as a weak excuse, but they in actual fact have a very poor command of the english language. it may not be their fault, but it is a fact.
i believe it's getting better nowadays. let's hope so anyway.
