eh,.. i didn't come back to this forum for a while.. totally forgot about it.. hope it's not too late.. anyway even if it is.. ehhe i can still state my views..
generally, singlish doesn't equal to bad english.
like mentioned above, many singaporeans use that as an excuse. i am proud to say that my english is good, but i definitely use singlish alot. more so when i speak, but sometimes also in writing. in this post i believe i will refrain from using any form of singlish.
in a way, u are right, singlish is a slang of english, since i believe the bulk of the words are actually english words. i don't know how it originated, but i have a strong suspicion that it was because many of us speak many languages and/or dialects. hence over the years things get a bit muddled and out comes our singlish!
the main thing is to know when to use singlish and when to use english. the sad fact is that many singaporeans not only use singlish as a weak excuse, but they in actual fact have a very poor command of the english language. it may not be their fault, but it is a fact.
i believe it's getting better nowadays. let's hope so anyway.
