Tough times indeed...but worth getting a degree especially when we are living on a paper society where qualification counts....
0.o
When ever people say qualifcation count.. i ask them a question
Billgates/ Dell/ Sim Wong Hoo, which of them got a freaking degree when they are rich like hell?
And these degree holders are too hum to do anything.
as Sim Wong Hoo say students are taught from a young age to obey instructions in an unquestioning manner, in a society where grades and paper certification are emphasised at the expense of some life skills.
Really?
I thought an education in NUS is heavily subsidized by the government.
No?
Although your argument is valid, it's no doubt that good qualifications will be good baits for a better prospect nowadays...Although I have to say that the education system isn't perfect.

Correct.... before subsidy is like $25000 +/- per year....
so if the govt. doesn't subsidise, tuition fees for a 4 year basic degree will reach $120k-odd...

"And the National University of Singapore, considered one of the world's elite schools, is among the most expensive in Asia, at an estimated $31,000 per year."
The article states $31K a year which I assume is in USD.
Is that right?

That's true....
i think we shld be thankful that at least the govt subsidizes the tertiary education in sg. when i was in the states, $ was a top concern for the students there when choosing a uni. even though their results might be good enough to make it into an Ivy League, they might think twice about enrolling into one simply bcos the tuition fees of such schools are way too high. it's at least 10 times more than what we pay! so at least in sg, everyone is given the chance to study in uni without being resticted by $. n i must say, NUS, NTU and SMU are all good and reputatble universities!
n, i dun think the aim to "be one's own boss" should be just so that he/she can slack. for me, i want to be an entrepreneur next time, to be in a business which i have interest in and that i'm passionate for. in that sense, i will be much happier working, n i will get the sense of satisfaction (and $ ;p) when i see my business grow and expand.
