since u're interested, i can tell u roughly wat kind of areas finance topics fall under. Some egs. are
-asset pricing (wat determines stock prices)
-predictibility of stock returns (whether you can get better returns by following certain trading strategies)
-seasonalities in stock rtns (e.g. January effect where there are you can earn higher rtns in Jan)
-mergers and acquisitions
-corporate finance (debts/dividends policies of firms etc)
-corporate governance
-COEs, CPFs, IPOs etc.
-event studies (how a certain event e.g. earnings announcement affect stock prices)
and a lot more...

Esp in..arts...at least in other facs, they haf their own classes...ppl in arts get thrown from one tut class to another...sem after sem...cannot even make frens like that...see yandao guys also cannot approach cos not enuff time to 'pei yang gan qing'...

CAPM is one model of asset pricing, and what some research tries to do is to find if there's a better model that will model stock returns.
Spreads, straddles etc are hedging strategies using combinations of stocks and options. Options are another area for finance research. But what I was referring to was more like using momentum strategies (buying past winner stocks i.e. stocks which had made good returns and selling past losers), contrarian strategies (buying past losers and selling past winners), etc.
January effect is simply the phenomenon whereby you can make greater profits in January compared to other months of the year. One explanation for this (in the case for countries with capital gains tax) is because people sell off their stocks which have made losses in December to minimise their tax liabilities, and then buy them back later in Jan.

I think the case of us being thrown from one tut class to another is the same for most facs, make do wif it lor..it's diff to make very good friends from this kind of system, i agree wif you. But what can we do? Just try to live wif it lor. Not being very helpful here, but just to let u noe that you're not the only one feeling like dat. -

No offence taken. I understand what you mean. You noe, after a while of having different classmates in different classes all the time, sometimes you stop trying to be friendly to new faces and just stay around with the group of pple that you already noe. Some people would not bother to put in the effort needed to make new friends. For me as well, unless we're supposed to work together on a group project, I wouldn't really bother to go talk to those people whom I dun noe even though they're from my class, unless maybe if they're sitting beside me, then just try to be a little more friendly. It's no wonder that people taking cross-fac may find us unfriendly, especially since they prob hardly noes anyone of us there. But I think if I were to go over to arts, I may find the arts people more dao. i think the obvious reason why nobody bothers to take part in this so-called discussion is due to the fact that you guys keep complainin about uni being boring...
its only as boring as you allow it to be...
instead of sitting on you arses complaining about people in the uni..why don't you guys take a good look at yourselves and do something about it...why don't you brainstorm ideas on how to make it more interesting for all...only then will people be interested in contributing to this discussion...the way i see it, this is just a make-shift pick-up joint having 2-3 idiots trying to pull a girl.. look... if this was really a make-shift thing just to get to know/impress girls then my only advice to these idiots are to come up with some interesting ideas on how uni life can be improved... this way,once some idea really kicks off don't you think you would have more opportunities to meet members of the fairer sex??
