VOTE EARTH
YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.
VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.
Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.
Are you participating in Earth Hour?
How will you do so?
Come pledge your participation here!
This is what I'll do: I'll get everyone at home to go to town so we can shut off the main switch at home!
Of course not. Although I think that's a good idea - leaving your home with the main switch shut off while you head to public places where electricity is still going to be working for people. :P
But what I'll do is...
I'll either hang around in the living room practising the piano, or I'll take a shower with one lighted candle!
so easy
meditate for 1 hour lor
i participate in earth hour everyday
when i sleep
Tsk! Sleep!
But good idea - sleep Earth Hour off. Provided it's not too warm :P
Meditation ah... 1 hour I cannot tahan, hehe.

13 earth hours a day
not bad what!
Even my room's phone needs electricity to power. lol
N yes.. lets ALL go out in that 1 hour. Drive around in town. I wonder does CO2 emission increase dramatically during Earth Hour . lol
Donaldson Tan from The Online Citizen makes a compelling case on why Singapore should implement a carbon tax.
The Case for Carbon Tax
17 March 2009. By Donaldson Tan
Last week, TOCI Writer Goh Zhi Qian discussed sustainability in Singapore’s context and argued for the introduction of environmental indicators to measure Singapore’s progress beyond the realm of absolute GDP growth. As much as Singapore’s economy is linked to the global economy, Singapore’s economy is also constrained by the finiteness of the global environment and resources. The leading environmental threat in the world is Climate Change. Its impact not only includes rising sea levels, but also increased frequencies of famines and droughts that would disrupt the global agricultural markets. Such environmental impact would have negative effect on world trade and both traditional and non-traditional security of nation states.
The chief cause of Climate Change is anthropogenic carbon dioxide emission and Singapore’s carbon footprint is among the highest in the world. Professor Marilyn Brown of the Georgia Institute of Technology revealed that Singapore’s carbon footprint is 15.2 tonnes of CO2 (tCO2) per capita at the Innovations in Economic Development Forum last year. Singapore’s per-capita carbon emission leads all 28 countries in Asia. The USA’s carbon footprint of 5.5 tCO2 per capita pales in comparison to Singapore’s. In fact, Singapore denies environmental responsibility by being a non-Annex-I party to the Kyoto Protocol and justifies its position by shifting the blame to exports and asserting that Singapore’s carbon footprint per dollar GDP is below the world average. Such blame shifting is typical of the “common but differentiated responsibility” rhetoric that is prevalent in international climate change politics.
