Hello everyone!
I am 12 and I appealed to MOELC to take French.I am currently self-studying it at home with my mother.I do not know anybody else taking French in MOELC.
If you are taking French, can you help me to elaborate on it?
I would really like to know more about French.
Like the syllabus, the teacher's pace, and if it is really harder than German and all that.
Merci.
hello
i haf not taken french nor german b4 and i m not a student too
i juz haf an interest or two in linguistics that's why i m replying to u. I am typing the below from my knowledge, not searching from the net and i am not sure whether you can understand all from what I type, so please feel free to reply me to ask for more facts and verifications
French is a language which is related to Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, Moldovan (these 5 are official languages of the countries respective of Europe), Langue D'Occidental, Catalan, Sicilian, Sardinian, Corsican (these 5 are the regional languages of the countries of Europe). All of these language comes under the umbrella of Romance Language Family, which in turns comes under the Indo-European Language Family.
The word French evolved from the root "Frank", which meant the original inhabitants living in the area before the Romance people invaded the area. These Franks were originally Germanic-speaking people (the ancestors of modern German, Dutch, Belgium, Danish people of that area). After they were subdued by the Romance people, they switched to the language of their conquerors, the Romance Language. But during the first few generations of their language switch, the originally Germanic language still had the effect of influencing the new language, that's why now we find that French is the most divergent Romance language in terms of it's vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation.
French is an SVO language, which means the Verb comes in between the Subject and the Object. In French, the adjective comes after the noun, similar to the Malay Language of Malaysia and Singapore.
German is also an SVO language, but it belongs to another language family called the Germanic language family, which in turns also comes under the Indo-European Language Family. In the Germanic language family, the language which is the most popular in the world now is English. Other languages in the Germanic language family are Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, Danish, Dutch.
Some interesting points on French:
- The "R" is not to be pronounced like the English "R"
- Many consonants at the end of the words are not pronounced when not followed by another word
- "H" is not pronounced in French, and "U" is read like "雨" as in Chinese, therefore "Hugo" is correctly read as in Chinese as 雨果, and not like some people would misread it as "Hew-Go"
