SINGAPORE: The Prime Minister's annual National Day Rally is a
keenly watched event where the government's plan to meet current and
future challenges is laid out.
The speech is keenly watched by political observers as well as the
man on the street. Issues expected to be tackled this year include the
state of the economy and how Singapore intends to weather the current
downturn.
The rally is broadcast live on television. But this year, there is an added interactive platform.
MediaCorp's Channel NewsAsia will have a special site dedicated for
the rally. You can watch the speech from four different angles, or take
part in polls during the event.
Besides giving your input, four selected bloggers will be writing
their perspectives on the speech. They include Channel NewsAsia's
Otelli Edwards and Maria Siow, 21-year-old Hong Jing Yi - a Brown
University undergraduate - as well as MediaCorp Radio's Brian Richmond.
Yeo Hock Lin, vice-president for E-News at MediaCorp's Interactive
Media Division, said: "They are from different age groups. The youngest
is an undergraduate and the oldest is our radio deejay Brian Richmond.
Their ages range from 20 to 60. Hopefully we can get them to represent
the different demographic profile of Singapore."
Social Internet sites will also be used. Viewers can upload their views on the speech via Facebook.
And Channel NewsAsia producers will also be twittering about what's going on behind the scenes as well.
Tan Lek Hwa, vice-president for Current Affairs at Channel
NewsAsia, said: "We have a big production team working on this. And
there's a lot of interesting behind the scenes happenings and all that
the viewers do not get to see. All they see on the night is actually
the fully completed set and PM delivering his message. So the
twittering aspect is really to give updates and interesting nuggets of
information."
The microsite will go live on 11 August and the Prime Minister will deliver his National Day Rally speech on 16 August.
