what do you all do to relax/calm yourself when things in life isnt very smooth?

I would read some motivational quotes from my Iphone apps or computer.
Cooking and baking also divert stress away. Just give the food away if you fear putting on weight.
I also enjoy having epals (email pen-pals) from overseas. I find writing to them relaxing and informative.But have to search for the right ones.
When you are hit hard, you mind will churn out of control. At that moment all advice will not be followed.
Just get a grip of your thoughts, string them out, one by one (write them down), and then tackle them one by one, and you'll find your rough patch not that bad at all.
Find solutions to your problems at the same time stay positive.
thats the nature of the world. ya, positive thinking and exercises like meditation, taiqi, walking, singing, swimming etc, will do the trick.

I never know how meditation is like.

You meditate on something. Not meditate for the sake of meditation.
Monks in the mountains meditate on the meaning of something.
Businessmen meditate on how to sort out their problems. And so on.
We either meditate haphazadly or in an orderly manner.
Most or us use the haphazad way.
No need to pay money to learn how to meditate in an orderly manner.
Just sit down and choose one item to think about, and do your best to keep the thought on that item. Like why always at any place you work, you have at least one enemy. Just think about that over and over again. Any other thoughts come in, stop and go back your chosen thought. Be mindful of your breathing. Breathe naturally. See that you are not disturbed. Just think on the thought, without any emotions. Slowly with practice, your will feel peace and be aware of the answer as well.
