Yes, a lot of work and care if you want to have a pet.
For toilet train you got to get them a litter tray and paper. After 2 weeks transfer the papers to the bathroom or toilet for the young kitten to familiarise. After another two weeks reduce the paper by half and finally take out the paper for the kitten when it is ready.
I recommend dog.
All pets need care. They are not toys. Don't get one on impulse, unless you can afford the time and effort. There are some part you have to bear with, the pet cannot behave like us.
Note: Some owners are worse than their pets.

My dog is toilet trained, only very very very very seldomly, she gets defiant.
At first she's litter trained, then i slowly moved bit by bit closer to the toilet, then finally i put inside the toilet, then just a newspaper within the toilet can le.. easy to clean..
