Hi,
I'll be going for my first trip to shanghai this coming january. the temperature will be from 0 - 8 degree celsius. have some queries in mind as this is my 1st time transition to winter.
1) what kind of layers should i wear?
2) is long john necessary??
3) any recommendation to wear to buy comfortable outer layer(jacket/coat etc)?
Thanks alot.
read up what kind of weather, then go to somewhere like Winter Wear or Winter Time... they'll advise you
if u have been living in the tropical region (SG) for ur lifetime and first time going to a winter place, long johns is encouraged, at least 1 set.
they are usually quite thin and can wash and dry overnight
2 sets if u are going to be there for more than 1 week (for hygiene purposes)
regarding the material for long john... should it be wool? I heard that it may cause some itchiness/discomfort to the skin becos of the material.
I'll be going for 2 weeks so I'll probably get a few...
Is spandex tights suitable to replace long john??
Can buy from Winter Time.
Anything above 0 degrees celsius I usually wear a jacket, t-shirt and jeans.
Campers' Corner sells very good winter jackets, but at inflated prices.
Can have a look at it if money is no issue to you.

Yes, you need long johns, I used it when I was in canada and it was -20. Didn't do shit. I hate cold places, it means you need to wear more, and it makes going to the loo that much more difficult. And the thing is more clothes, more weight, less allowance for you to bring goodies back.

Tights & pantyhose needed for the legs, for tops, wool pullover will do,Shanghai not very cold, much better than Harbin which i went this year[-30C].
If its budget winter wear, then go buy from Winning, they have a branch at compass point. Thomson plaza having a winter wear fair, when I was there last sat, but it may be gone now.
Don't think you need long johns, unless you are a girl, because girl tend to get cold easily.
For me I would do fine with just an extra jacket.
If it's below 0 degrees celsius, then maybe I need long johns and gloves.
Thanks alot for the recommendations..
can guys replace long john with those winter tights? some long johns i've seen are quite loose.
Currently Uniqlo is having fall/winter season, are the products there good and reasonable for the price?
Im under an average budget anyway... i wouldnt mind cheaper mid layers but a decent inner for comfort and outer for protection..

1) 3 layers Maximum if it is 0 - 8 degs
2) if long john is considered one of the layers then it is a yes
3) make sure your coat/jacket is light, not heavy, wind-proof, warm (put your arm into the jacket to check how fast it will warm down your arm) and don't dress like an eskimos
It is only 0 to 8 degs, and you're not going to the north/south poles. So you want to get a jacket that you can use to visit many other countries.
So many stores selling winter wears nowadays, if you cannot find any, then you need to go and kill yourself.
it'll be rather cold in shanghai in Jan, with heavy wind outside. But i think long johns are not necesssary cos there are warm in public place, like office ,subway station & mrt..anti-wind coat is necessary
long johns -> cotton t-shirt -> pullover/sweater
add windbreaker/jacket if there is wind
if snowing wear down jacket
wear thick socks
Thank alot!
hmmm still wondering if i should bring both windbreaker and a down jacket over...
also regarding the bottom, long john + jeans should be sufficient right? corduroy pants etc?
legs not so easy feel cold, especially if u are moving (walking)
long johns and fittings jeans would be sufficient

Their Heatec undergarments are thin, light and actually quite effective, although at $25 each they're not cheap. Personally I can get by with 3 layers (down jacket and 2 shirts, plus tights and jeans). The most important thing for me is keeping my head, hands and toes warm. Leather or Thinsulate gloves are much better than the cheap wooly ones.
Most important are to keep your ears warm, chances are, they will freeze and drop off first, and you won't even know it. Tip of your nose also, freezerburn.
Stay in warm Singapore instead
