I'm going on my internship soon and I'm lost between this 2 countries, I'll be going to Kumamoto(Fukuoka) in Japan or Brisbane in Australia.
I've been to Brisbane as a tourist and I liked it though it was all fun and games, the closest to Japan I've ben to is only S.Korea.
I'm worried about the language barrier if I go to Japan although my classmate who can speak Japanese fluently will be going as well.
I don't really need a companion anywhere because it's a chance for me to experience independence.
My budget is only SGD700 per month while I'll probably be away for 4 to 6 months. I'm worried that the things there will cost more than I can afford. For Australia, I'll have to fork out AUD40 per week for my accomodation as a topup while my lodging will be fully paid for in Japan and for 1000Yen I can get 3 meals covered in Japan.
Currently, I'm still laying towards Australia because of the common language that we have.
Anyone know which city would be cheaper for me?

So.... you don't need a companion.
Then you don't know how to speak the language. But you said your classmate who speaks fluent japanese is going. BUT you don't want a companion and want to be independant without knowing the language of the place you want to go?
i think aussie better la.
but u like a bit of challenge,
then go japan lo.
but then again, 4-6 months leh, so aussie la aussie la
japan...
no doubt...
brisbane.. been there too, ok only la.
aussie got no ozone layer, so u better put on your sunscreen.
japanese food is better than aussie. may even learn drifting =P
What about language? Do you know Japanese?
What I meant about companion was that, I wouldn't mind going without a companion.
As for language, I can only speak basic japanese.

i reckon japan will give you a better, differing experience overall; but you seriously need to reconsider your 1000yen 3 meals budget. unless you are cooking in or the meals subsidized by someone, 1k yen gets you no where in terms of daily meals. you go to a smallish eatery where you put coins in a vending machine for a food ticket (pretty much one of the cheapest eats anywhere in japan), it will still set you back 450yen or more for a decent meal.
and you get hot green tea on the house.....
I know in the dormitory in Japan, 1100yen gets me 3 meals a day.
Self Cooking will be cheaper right?
Japan lah, Japan got your favorite AV gals to see and date, Australia only got kangeroos and big fat mama.
By the way since you are having a dilemna between these two countries, may I suggest u go Papua New Guinea, it is in the middle of these 2 countries. Very cheap

Go Australia then, I also don't want you to go Japan anyway.
Maybe you want to check out what you can buy with only 1000Yen first, I don't think you can buy 3 meals with 1000Yen. Cup noodles and tidbits maybe lor.....but not 3 regular meals.
And I also don't think you can survive with only S$700 in Japan for 1 month.
So go Australia, why make your life so difficult right now? You can always go Japan next time when you got money and working.
Australia fucking boring la. Go to Japan
Go Australia.
With your $700,
$400 rent a lousy car.
$100 buy charcoal and matches and firestarter
$200 petrol
Then every night, drive your car onto the Aussie roads and knock down as many animals as u can and you can then BBQ your roadkills for your meals. Experience of a lifetime.
watashi wa nihonjin desu...
$700 can only go Australia nia.
$700 can go Batam already....popular choice recommended by all sg uncles.
I think I go Japan, I've worked out. $300 for 20 days of meals. Because the hostel provides 3 meals at 1000yen.
that leaves me $350+/- to spend every month on other stuffs!!
Maybe its fukuoka, that is y so different. I dont remember any hotel in tokyo offer that kind of price. And some forumer point out a v gd point, the normal kind of eatery offer min 400 plus to 500 yen for a meal. I hope ur transportation is already taken care of beside the 700 sgd u have for ur allowance. Everything in japan is expensive and given with the recent currency exchange, u will have even less to spend.
But given that I will still choose japan. Do bring more $$ if possible so u can pay tokyo a visit at least u come back to sg. Gd luck ;)
I guess Japan is cheaper for me, because I wouldn't need to pay so much for accomodation, comparing 3600yen to AUD160 every month.
And for Japan, I wouldn't need to travel to my workplace.
I prefer Australia... prefer angmoh countries... lol....
