Errmm....I just returned from Malacca on Sat night. Went on Thurs night.
Bought back plenty of mini 'lao poh bing' made with real wintermelon meat. Open face pineapple tarts, love letters and love letters folded into triangles.
I also bought back 2 pieces of 4 year old batik sun dress and some magnets plus one set of 'suan jie gun' the two segment wooden sticks in soft toy form.
And oh....we stopped at some Jusco shopping malls and I bought lots of their in house brand Scarlette Bras and undies and lots of anime dvds.
We ate as we go, the nonya restuarants and the chicken rice balls are disappointments so we avoided them as much as possible. We however had some baba chendol, mee siam and rojak that was okay.
Need to mention. We even gone to Baba Charlie's house to buy nonya kueh.
forgot to mention.
highlights of the trip was a particular new mosque located on a island near to melacca and walking thru jonker street during the weekend nights at their night pasar malam.
hi vk74 we reach there on sat noon
ytd bought so cheese/mocha tarts
also pineapple tarts that were freshly baked on the spot
The weekend nights, they have pasar malam type stalls at Jonker Street. Got go see?
I didnt manage to buy some of those old chinese red clogs or their sarang kebayas and anitique peranakan jewellery.
Maybe when I got my own place then its easier to store those stuffs.
The children baticks sundress does not look authetic batik material. But I buy them anyway to send to my neice at USA.
Maybe when I get my own place back and buy in a Sewing machine will be easier to just buy batik materials and sew the dresses.
we bought a Sewing machine at M$20-those handheld type
those nice eating places always so crowded
so we went to 3 places but give up cos q like 20+ ppl
so you guys enjoyed the mini break?

I saw those handheld type sewing machines! They are very cute! I think they will be perfect to hem skirts, pant legs and curtains! But I didnt buy them.
BTW, for curtains. always use those double side tape to hem them first. Then wash a few times when the materials shrunk, then hem them properly with a sewing machine.

Go on weekdays.....I also find Malacca too crowded because of the long weekend in Singapore.
i think this past weekend would be especially bad coz it's the easter weekend where everyone from north, south, east, west converges in malacca for the st anne's pilgrimage

I met a fellow officer at Melacca.
While friends was struggling to squeeze into a clock shop to take pictures. My fren, along with the rest of her friends. Called to me from across the street at 'San Shu Gong' restaurant.
We spoke for a while.
Anyway, I met her again last night and we talked about the huge crowd that was at Malacca.
She tells me, its possible that the drama serial 'xiao niang rea' is what prompts people to go down to Melacca to sample the foods and experience the nonya heritage.
