I was thinking, can we all plan some kind of trip for mid year or end of the year so there is something to look forward to?
Like 2008 is going to be so boring. Perhaps we can put 10 bucks away everyday then at the end of the year, go to Mt Kilimanjaro or something... -

that is in fact a great idea. I was thinking of going to easten m'sai. I got a few fren there. It would be great to go trailing up some Mt there, or just enjoy the beach or outdoor life there. Visit some of the native or something. Let fix a place and a date? Cool! How do we go to eastern malaysia? Drive or take a train? Taking trains are better, sleeper trains maybe! Next weekend! Or maybe Borneo or Sarawak... hunter's trail or something. Ermm... well eastern m'sia is like a big island. So we can only fly there. Most likely we would drive when there and trail thru sarawak or something. Either go kuching or sibu. Love the kolo mee there. As for Borneo, i dun really know, heard it is kinda boring. -

If it is road trip u thinking of, that should be easy. How about somewhere in Feb or march? If i pass my driving, i dun mind driving up either with my company car or my car (if i do get one) if possible. Else just T-loan my m8 car in m'sai. 1) Set a date range from xxx to xxx
2) go to http://www.airfares.com.sg/ or tour fairs to find the cheapest airfare to any destination. Airfare vary from time to time and from location to location. Example : Brisbane normally cost $800 on SIA. But sometimes, Brisbane cost $500 on SIA. U may consider to go to Brisbane.
3) From the choice of destination, surf the net on wat u can do there. If u r comfortable going there, then, go lor
4) Surf for transportations
5) Surf for hotels
Usually, airfares are the first to solve first because the price is fix and probably will contribute to the highest percent of expenses (Depend on duration of stay and standard of living) ... Then, compromise on transportations and hotels can be made for tighter budgets...

Me think we should start off something small and near. If it goes well, we can up it to one that involve gateways. So let start with the country north of us. Frankly, the only Asian country I will visit again as a short 'getaway' by flight will be Laos, Luang Pabrang area or Vientienne.
Tropical beaches and resorts are only worthwhile when it's couple hood activity with the promise of spas, suntan and getting laid. So we'll nix that for this forum.
Apart from that, places such as Malaysia would be nice, but only if it involves sleeper train rides. Not willing to spend so much on it because I've been to Malacca, Penang, KL, JB etc etc when I was a kid. It's rather boring going back to places I've been to before. Ispyyy is going to remind me that it is always the company that matters and everyone can have fun, just depends on whether or not they want to. Yep that's right, but if you're asking me to drive up to Malaysia just to have seafood and drink beer, I'd rather do it at Changi Village. Friend of mine was in Borneo last year and stayed in a jungle, mingle with the tribes. Now that is another story altogether if we get to see some tigers or do some hunting for a change.
What I was thinking of initially was a longer trip. Between 10 to 15 days. It will be something to look forward to, an adventure. Some where far off from big cities etc. Mt Kilimanjaro is good. But air tickets cost 2K over. So some planning has to be done beforehand. Which is why I am suggesting to do it at year end. But then again for most people, they wouldn't know whether they'll be free at year end. So I guess we'll just leave that idea hanging for now. -

Dude you want to fly all the way to brisbane and book a hotel do what? Stroll around in parks? If I fly to Australia I will go for back packer's inn and just rent a car drive around or just take trains. I thought when u mention short weekend road trips, it will be to the nearby country, m'si. Anything above that will most likely last more then 4 days. The only thing good abt driving is that u get to visit the more inaccessible places instead of the usual tourist trap. If we are driving, it shouldnt cost much.
If it is a sleeper train trip u wish, i would suggest waiting till they joinup all the rail line all the way to china. That should b done by year 2010 or 2012. Think i read that in the last asean meeting. Then u would truly have sleeper train trip worth taking.
As for the out of city trip u hopping for, well that will require some planning and saving up. But dun go dismissing it yet. I bet there is lot of ppl interested in doing thing slightly out of the norm and more adventurous. Yeah year end seem a better timing as most 9-5 job holder would be able to clear their leave to do a long break. Some fresh air in the jungle might be welcome for change.
Let just do something near 1st and get ourself a gang gear toward travelling. Unless u wish to signup with some group tour. -
I agree with what u said, except that sometime it will be better off staying in a 2 star hotel instead of backpacker inn. Trust me... the rest u gotten out is worth the money. Try thinking in the line of hot water in a freezing weather, and bug free bed. Dun forget, if u are tired out from a restless sleep, u dun really enjoy the trip. Most ppl think m'sia are boring, which i agree to a certain extend. But to me, i rather like going there, coz i get to crash at m8 place for week and live the life they go thru daily. I once live 2 month in a kumpong at batu pahat. Oh all those sweet old memories of pre-urbanisation. Waking up to the call of rooster. Picking durian in the morning, chopping banana off, etc. Visit local delicacy. All in all i had a great time.Originally posted by ispyyy:><

I wish Australia is as small as Singapore where one is able to just explore everything within a few weeks. But in reality, nope!!! For example :
Singapore travel to Gold coast (air only) - $1300 (including air tax)
Singapore travel to Gold coast (thru Brisbane + train) - $700 (including air tax + 1hr plus of train journey)
It is just about budget and planning. Not necessary u stay in back packer's inn or rent a car is going to being cheap ... Sometimes, the land packages offered in Australia itself is the cheapest and the most reliable... I can stay in a 4 star hotel but still pay backpacker inn's stay... I can fly from Melbourne to Sydney and still be cheaper than driving...
Of coz, end of the day, it is up to one's interest. Australia is just too big... There is too much for one to do there... -

hmmmmm.... but driving going to be very tiring wor... think even passenger will be tired ... we dont say about the driver... How to enjoy pre-urbanised areas if all of us r tired especially the poor driver ???
