can anyone tell me about Singapore's customs, foods, clothing, fun? Anything that would help me know what to expect when I study abroad this spring
Singapore has no 4 seasons, everyday is just rain and shine. While raining may sound cooling, it's actually not. Our humidity rates are high (at least 80% every day). Be prepared to bathe at least 3 times per day when you reach here. You may enjoy an ice cream or two every day.
Customs wise... lots to learn. Observe. If in doubt, ask on the Internet, never directly to them, god knows what you said that pissed them off.
Food - The food forum here has a nice guide on foods that are nice in Singapore. Most food here are spicy by default; if you never say, chillies will be automatically added to your food. If you don't want chillies, remember to tell the hawker. Restaurants wise... I'm not too sure. Ask around.
Clothing - Hopefully you have heard about our 3 S. Shirt/singlet, shorts, sandals/slippers. It's directly related to our weather.
Fun - do whatever you like but don't get caught. The number 1 rule here in Singapore, else you get into big trouble. The laws here are strict and open to interpretation of any kind. If you are lucky, you can get off lightly, otherwise, no.
Studies here - hmm... being independent helps a lot. And we love to say Google is your friend. The libraries here may be your next best friend. Jurong, Woodlands and Toa Payoh libraries have quite a huge collection of books, so you need worry about your research. National Library has a huge collection of books too.
Last thing you need to learn - our language aka Singlish. Singlish is not just the lahs, lehs, lors added at the end of our sentences. It is a mixture of Chinese, English, Malay, Tamil and our dialects.
This website will help you figure out our language:
