What are the most important lessons that Singapore can learn from the rise and fall of Venice? EYA.
Although conditions between Venice in the past and Singapore today are very different, some basic principles of success and decline can be drawn.
The most important lesson that Singapore can learn is the need for a capable and committed leadership. Singapore needs to choose good and credible leaders. Venice rose because its leaders were willing to place state interests above their personal interests. Later, they became currupted and neglected their responsiblities and chose to adopt lavish lifestyles. Venice fell also becuase of the weak process of selecting its military leaders so it is the duty of every citizen to elect the right persons into goveernment.
Singapore should be adaptable by being flexible and keeping updated on internal and external factors. Venice rose because the Venetians kept up with the times and improved by introducing initiatives eg banking services. Later, they became complacent and moral decay set in. Every citizen should upgrade his skills and seize new opportunities.
Good international relations should be practised. When the Ottomans attacked venice, none of the other Italian city-states came to help as venice became arrogant and dubious in its relations with these neighbour states. It is thus important for Singapore to have friends in the regional and international coommunity eg ASEAN and UN. There is a need to build close ties and good working relations with other countries.
Finally, Singapore needs a strong defence force for its military deterrence as Venice relied too much on mercenaries. Loyalty was thus missin, even amongst the leaders. To be well prepared, Singapore needs to build up its military might and continue with its NS policy. At first, the Venetians were committed but they took success for granted and became complacent. Singaporeans must be willing to make sacrifices when there are crises or setbacks so that the country can continue to prosper.
All the lessons are inter-connected and will contribute to the success of any country if they are practised in tandem.

I agree that the Venetian government played a vital role in the rise of Venice as a great city-state. However, there was another important factor. This was the economic factor - trade monopoly and the venetains' adventurous spirit.
The government played a vital role because of an exemplary political system, a fair election system, capable leaders and practical policies.
Venice had a very strong government - while European states practised feudalism, Venice was a repulic as the leaders were elected and this was closest to modern day democracy. Election was based on nomination, balloting and voting to ensure that there was no nepotism nor incompetent leaders. In the beginning, the leaders were forward looking and capable. Talented people were elected to serve in government. Practical polices were implmented to respond to the demands of a changing environment eg paying prirates to stop harassing its trading ships until they built up a strong navy. The Venetian government also accommodated the stronger powers to the weaker ones. The Signoria was formed to check on power such that dictatorship was not allowed so as to secure the loyalty of the people.
Economic factors were equally important in accounting for the rise of Venice. Venice used its navy to destroy trade competitors to control the sea routes and thus enjoy trade monopoly, especially in salt. Venetians also travelled overland in search of business, fortune and adventurer and explorer. Banking and finacial services were offered to other traders - such economic foresight led to the further rise of Venice.
The government (political factors) played a more important role than the economic factors because a stalbe political climate is the most essential if trade were to prosper. If the venetian government was weak, chaos and disorder would result. Who then, would want to trade with Venice? So, since the strong Venetian government ensured that there was peace, democracy and political might, Venice continued to rise even faster as they enjoyed a prosperous trade monopoly through their adventurous spirit of discovery.
All factors are inter-linked and they led to the rapid rise of Venice as a great city state. There can be no isolation of factors.
