David Beckham created the 15th-minute winner for Mike Magee as LA Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 in their Major League Soccer Western Conference semi-final, first-leg match on Sunday.
Beckham floated a high ball into the New York penalty area and Magee took advantage of static Red Bulls defenders, arms raised appealing for offside, to blast home.
The Galaxy goal came after their Ireland international striker Robbie Keane hit the post and they enjoyed the better of the game playing some neat possession football.
New York, with former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry in attack, left it late to pile on the pressure but L.A. held firm.
The Galaxy were helped by some good saves from keeper Josh Saunders who denied Joel Lindpere at close-range and then pulled off a great save in injury time to foil Mexican Rafa Marquez.
Marquez and the Galaxy's Juninho will miss the second leg after being given red cards for their part in a fracas after the final whistle involving a number of players where punches were thrown.

David Beckham had a hand in both goals as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 to book their place in the MLS Western Conference final.
The Galaxy led going into the game following a 1-0 win in the first leg and they finished the job at Home Depot Center.
Widely-travelled Birmingham-born striker Luke Rodgers levelled the aggregate scores in the fourth minute when he put the Red Bulls ahead with a low shot, following a through-ball from Thierry Henry.
However, Beckham and Mike Magee again teamed up to restore their team's overall advantage.
In the first leg Magee finished off a Beckham free-kick and tonight he headed in a trademark corner by the former England midfielder to make it 1-1 three minutes before half-time.
After Rodgers found the side-netting in the second half Beckham was fouled in the penalty area by Roy Miller and Landon Donovan stepped up to seal a 3-1 aggregate success from the spot in the 75th minute.
The Galaxy will have home advantage when they face Real Salt Lake in Sunday's final.
In the Eastern Conference semi-final second leg, Brian Ching netted at the end of the first half to give the Houston Dynamo a 1-0 victory and 3-1 aggregate victory over the Philadelphia Union.
Ching headed home a Brad Davis free-kick from 12 yards to set up a final against Sporting Kansas City in Kansas - also on Sunday - and maintain Houston's hopes of a third MLS Cup in six years.
