The former Liverpool manager is the man the Baggies believe will win the battle to keep them in the Premier League.
Chris Hughton, axed by Newcastle in December, had been hotly tipped to replace Roberto Di Matteo.
But chairman Jeremy Peace has opted for Hodgson because of his success at Fulham.
Struggling Albion - out of the drop zone only on goal difference - face a relegation six-pointer against rock-bottom West Ham at The Hawthorns tomorrow, but caretaker boss Michael Appleton is expected to be in charge for that match.
It is a remarkably swift return to management for Hodgson, 63. He was sacked by Liverpool on January 8 as he struggled to keep them in contention for the Champions League places.
Kop supremo John W Henry was forced to take drastic action after dressing-room and terrace confidence collapsed.
Di Matteo was sacked on Sunday after almost two years in charge. Hodgson will be the Baggies' NINTH boss since 2000.
Time to redeem some reputation.

FUCK U NIGGA!!!! GO SUCK UR FATHER BALLS
Hodgson takes over a side that have slipped into relegation trouble and sacked Roberto Di Matteo last Sunday.
The 63-year-old left Liverpool last month after an unhappily short tenure - he is the current Premier League manager of the year after leading Fulham to the Europa League final last season.
A club statement said caretaker boss Michael Appleton would stay in charge for Saturday's crucial game against West Ham, assisted by Keith Downing and Dean Kiely.
West Brom are just one place outside the relegation zone in 17th spot, two points above bottom club West Ham.
The club had a good start to the season under Di Matteo following their promotion from the Championship last term.
However a run of 13 defeats in 18 matches in all competitions resulted in the Italian being relieved of his duties.
gd
juz hope they can survive in epl can lia0
Good luck boss! :)
Good Luck, West Brom.
Di Matteo was doing ok.
ah roy is suited for this type of job.
making sure teams survive in EPL.
I think it's going to be very tough... Just look at their remainding fixtures...
Arsenal, Chelsea, Villa, Spurs... And those that got at least some chance ones... All away matches... Birmingham, Sunderland, Wolves, Newcastle... lol.
I think West Brom is taking him to prepare for next season in the Championship League.. .Otherwise why give him 2 yrs contract for? But if he stays, they got a good chance of coming straight up again...
12 West Ham (H)
26 Stoke City (A)
5 Birmingham (A)
19 Arsenal (H)
2 Liverpool (H)
9 Sunderland (A)
16 Chelsea (H)
23 Tottenham (A)
30 Aston Villa (H)
7 Wolves (A)
14 Everton (H)
22 Newcastle (A)
Their not nicknamed the Yo-yo club for nothin'. lol.
i think west ham's going down. they have to win the 6-pointers to have a chance of surviving.
another 3 - 3 against west brom.
wth!!!
Baggies may escape this time, but hard to say about Wolves.
Good thing about being a footy coach is that it is always easy to find work. Look at Steve Coppell. He quit Reading due to their failure to beat Burnley at the promotion playoffs but still landed a job with Bristol City in no time. Hodgson was recently fired by Liverpool but WBA still wants him.
