Liverpool are attempting to persuade Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier to part ways with England winger Stewart Downing, according to The Express.
New manager and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish is looking to expand his squad’s depth and apparently believes that Downing would give the Reds' midfield some of the much-needed pace and creativity it desperately lacks when skipper Steven Gerrard is unavailable.
Goal.com UK previously revealed Liverpool’s interest in signing Downing’s team-mate Ashley Young, but it now looks like the Reds may have to settle for the ex-Middlesbrough winger as Houllier has claimed it would take "crazy money" to lure Young away from Villa Park.
It is reported it would cost Liverpool around £10 million to secure Downing's services.
if I am not wrong, i think maybe, they should focus on building a solid platform at the back first. they already got a WC's keeper, just one or two WC's defenders, and then maybe, they consider wingers/attackers?? just my take.
this is a curse......they are getting those mediocre to above average players. What happened to the really good ones?

they can't afford the really good ones...or the really good ones are not tempted by a move to pool....
They have new owners, right? Henry. If no cash...he come for what? lol. Or maybe they wanna splash the cash in june....when the season restarts.
Pool eye downing.....chelsea pienaar, weird transactions.

not as much as you think there is...you certainly can't see pool spending the type of money they did for torres, players like meireles are their best targets
be prepared for more of your so called "weird transactions" , this summer excluding man city the ones making big moves are mostly mid to bottom table teams like west brom, birmingham, sunderland...the big clubs are spending less and it's going to continue...
Buy him as a replacement of injury Prone Joe Cole?
His free kick/curve is gd
Hope they are not splashing cash for useless players.
There are already a lot of them in the team and no space for extra players warming the bench.
The price is also too high.
Ok lah... Downing still an ok player and I suspect Pool need more English players to meet the 8 quota... Pool currently only have Carragher, Glen Johnson, Gerrard... That's why they bought Joe Cole, Brad Jones and Paul Konchesky... this season...
Otherwise they can only register lesser than the 25 players...

if wc = the recent world cup, i could count 5 off the top of my head (agger, soto, skrtel, carra & johnson)
wingers i know maxi only (maybe kuyt, but holland plays 2-3-1ish in front)
Not that Stewart isn't good, but I don't think what he has to offer now is what Liverpool need.
I think the transfer may well be ongoing if Lerner decides to recoup some cash back from Bent's and Makoun's transfers.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is set to offer Stephen Warnock a return to Anfield to help plug the club's leaky defence, according to The Mirror.
Dalglish is keen to bring in the former Red on loan with a view to a permanent move as he looks to solve the left-back problem that has plagued Liverpool all season.
England right-back Glen Johnson has been played out of position to accommodate the emergence of Martin Kelly.
However, the move hinges on Villa boss Gerard Houllier agreeing to do business with his former employers.
Liverpool hope to bring in the former Melwood trainee who has not been a first team regular under Houllier.
The Reds have also been linked with Warnock’s Villa and England team-mates Stewart Downing and Ashley Young.
Any of the deals could be done as Houllier looks to do some business of his own with speculation surrounding an £18 million move for Sunderland striker Darren Bent.

my mistake - WC = WORLD CLASS. and sadly, none suffice at the moment, no offense.
The last I have seen of warnock, there's nothing special about this guy. Average defender but not the attacking fullback or fantastic crosser. Jia lat jia lat. You think Real, Bayern or Barca or Man Utd wld go for him? No man.

actually, defenders are meant to be defending. if they are good in that, money-value. if they can multi-task like crossing, or maruading down the touchline, good.
else, i prefer them to just defend.

But nowadays clubs no longer play with Right-Left Backs but rather Right-Left Wing-Backs. No doubt defensive duties as a defender is important, it is now also equally important that such players are inept at attacking as well.
Warnock is another over-hyped English player. Might as well get Roberto Carlos.
