GERRARD CLOSE TO TRAINING RETURN
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard could return to training on Monday after making good progress in his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.
The midfielder sustained the knock whilst playing in England's 2-1 defeat by France in November.
The 30-year-old's absence has not been as crucial as first thought, with the Reds beating West Ham 3-0 at Anfield before losing to a late winner at Spurs on Sunday.
Gerrard will not play any part in the Europa League tie against Steaua Bucharest or Monday's match at home to Aston Villa, but could face Newcastle five days later.
"Steven's going well. He's back running, though not back in training," the club's head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner said.
"He's certainly looking good to play the Newcastle game, which has been our target all along.
"We're hoping he'll be back in training at the start of next week.
"Everything's gone to plan."
