Bolton Wanderers striker Johan Elmander has failed to agree terms on a new one-year deal at the club, alerting several Premier League rivals to his availability.
The club's record-signing has reportedly turned down an offer to stay at the Reebok Stadium and the 29-year-old could be heading elsewhere as a free agent at the end of the season, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Trotters' are therefore likely to try to sell their top-scorer in the January transfer window, so as to recoup some of the £10 million they originally paid for him.
Although initially a flop at Bolton, Elmander has eight Premier League goals to his name this season as his performances have helped take the side into fifth place.
His impressive displays have sparked interest from a host of clubs from England and abroad, with Liverpool, Newcastle United and Stoke City currently tipped to battle it out to sign the Swedish international.
Having made no secret of his club's financial problems, Bolton chairman Phil Gartside is prepared to cash in on Elmander if his £3.5 million valuation can be met when the January transfer window opens.
Trotters' manager Owen Coyle believes he has enough goal-scoring prowess in his squad to offset Elmander’s exit, and hopes that some of the money generated from his sale can be used to find a replacement further down the line.
Bolton had been hopeful of keeping the striker but after a meeting with Gartside, Elmander’s agent was left to ponder pastures new for his client.
no joke
Liverpool?
u gt milan jovanic
u still wan elmander?
But this guy is not bad leh... For his size, he is a handful for defenders... And he can also play rather well on the ground... I think Chelsea should be interested too as he is the kind of player they like to get, big, strong and bully defenders kind. An ideal replacement for an ageing Drogba... ?
Anyway, he is rather cheap at $3.5m or free in Jun... Better than getting Andy Carroll who may cost anything from $12m to $20m?
The only drawback is, this guy is 29 yrs old...
