Real Madrid and Barcelona are considering sharing more of their television income with other Spanish teams for the first time since 1996.
All first and second tier clubs will meet today to discuss a new deal after complaints over the "extraordinary imbalance" which had left Real and Barcelona receiving around half of the league's annual €520m (£450m) annual broadcast income.
Javier Tebas, negotiating on behalf of more than a dozen of the smaller teams, told Bloomberg.com: "We hope to get an agreement. But it's very complicated: it's like cutting up a cured ham among 42 people."
Tebas said any agreement would involve "a lot of variables" including television audience and past success.
