The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Disciplinary Committee has docked five points from the Young Lions and Beijing Guoan Talent, and fined both clubs S$5,000 for their involvement in the Sept 7 brawl at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
However, the biggest punishments were delivered to Young Lions’ Khairul Nizam and Fairoz Hasan, who were both given an eight-month ban from all football-related activities and fined S$2,000 and S$1,500 respectively.
Beijing Guoan’s Meng Yang was also banned for a year from all football-related activities and fined S$3,000 for kicking Young Lions’ Faritz Abdul Hameed’s head.
The remaining players involved were each fined between S$1,000 and S$3,000 and suspended from all football-related activities between four to 12 months.
The punishment meted out on Tuesday night by the five-man disciplinary committee saw a total of 16 players from both teams charged for gross misconduct which brought the game into disrepute.
Disciplinary committee chairman K. Bala Chandran said that five video footages of the match were extensively reviewed during the two-day hearing.
“It provided us with a clear view of the incidents for each and every player. The players have been very remorseful in their mitigation and have admitted to the charges laid on them.”
Young Lions team manager Eugene Loo, said after the hearing, “We believe that the hearing conducted was detailed and the appropriate action was carried out by the FAS Disciplinary Committee. The players have expressed their remorse for the incident and they understand the importance of maintaining their discipline and professionalism at all time. Once again, we are deeply sorry for the incident and look to move forward from the incident.”
The same sentiments was shared by Beijing Guoan Talent.
Said team manager, Jonathan Wong, “We apologise once again for the incident. We believe that the players deserved to be punished for their actions and the appropriate action was meted out.”
The brawl on Sept 7 started after the Young Lions scored the equalising goal in the 89th minute and according to a local football official, a Beijing Guoan player went in with a “career-ending tackle” on one of the Young Lions’ player once the game resumed.
Two Young Lions players, Gabriel Quak and Abdul Hameed, were sent to hospital after they were injured in the brawl.
The FAS then launched an investigation into the brawl before suspending both teams from the S-League until the disciplinary hearing which commenced on Monday.
According to the FAS, the remaining S-League fixtures of both teams will continue and their match which was abandoned with the score at 1-1, will not be replayed.
Both teams have a week to appeal against the verdict.
