Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will reportedly look to land Karim Benzema this summer as he looks to improve the club’s attacking options. The Emirates boss knows that his chances of landing the French international depend very much on whether Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a big name striker signing this summer or whether the Bernabeu boss keeps faith with the ever improving former Lyon man.
Real Madrid’s main striking threat up front comes in the shape of Gonzalo Higuain but the Argentine has spent most of the season out with a herniated disc which left the La Liga giants with a paucity of options up front and Benzema initially struggled to fill the hole which led to the loan capture of Emmanuel Adebayor, which in turn appears to have sparked life into the powerfully built 23 year old.
Wenger has long been a fan of Karim Benzema and was linked with moves to sign the striker when he was in his Lyon pomp but a deal never quite came to fruition but the Gunners manager is ready to try again as he looks to freshen up his strike force.
Given that Robin Van Persie struggles to make it through a season without a significant injury and that Marouane Chamakh has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League following an impressive start, Arsenal could well do with signing a striker who can score 20 goals a season. Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela may well be offloaded as neither the Danish or Mexican international has shown themselves deserving of a regular first team spot.
Real Madrid would not accept less than £25m for Benzema which will of course lead many to state that Arsene Wenger never spends big, but if he fails to secure the Premier League title this season and therefore makes it six seasons without silverware, then the Frenchman may have to change a habit of a lifetime and invest in an established star signing and in turn break the club’s relatively low transfer purchase record.
