  Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the start of the Barclays Premier League season with news Rio Ferdinand could miss the next month of the season after picking up an injury in training.

  Ferdinand looks certain to miss the club's season curtain raiser against Everton and there could be worse to come once the centre back discovers results of the scan on his injury.

  Sir Alex Ferguson already has Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones absent and now faces a troubling wait to discover the full extent of the damage to Ferdinand's leg.

  Sportsmail understands he suffered the injury during a session at the club's Carrington training base and is likely to force United boss Sir Alex Fergsuon into fielding a patched-up defence at Goodison park on Monday evening.

  Ferguson could now play midfielder Michael Carrick at centre-half alongside fit again Nemanja Vidic against the Toffees.

  i expect rvp ronney and kagawa to lead on sat. time to drop welbeck

  a review of the setup at utd would be ideal too.. the injuries record in recent years is disturbing.

  The injury to the centre-backs was the cause of it. United didn't had the physical presence once Rio, Smalling is out. Fellaini was great last night and many big clubs will have a problem when they go to Everton. United were unfortunate that they have to meet Everton so early and also away while their centre-backs are all out injured and Vidic may not be fully fit yet either. However it's still early days to the season and United will make up for this lose...

  This fellaini has been very good for a few seasons now. Everton without him is nothing. He wins the ball in midfield, either by his head, body or legs and then distributes the ball around. All attacks start from him. And he also does a lot of tackling.

  It's weird that big clubs didn't come in for him.
