Old Trafford legend Schmeichel rejoins United as official ambassador
Great Dane: Peter Schmeichel was part of the 1999 treble-winning side
Peter Schmeichel is returning to Manchester United.
The former Old Trafford goalkeeper is to become one of the club's official ambassadors - a 'legend' in the same role as other former players like Bryan Robson and Gary Neville - but it is unclear if he was also to be involved on the coaching side.
There was, however, a real sense of excitement at the club that Schmeichel is about to be reunited with the club he served with such distinction.
His last appearance was in that stunning 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich in the Nou Camp, the Dane memorably running the length of the pitch and launching himself at the David Beckham corner that led to Teddy Sheringham's stoppage time equaliser.
Schmeichel had announced earlier that season that he intended to leave the club that May. That he ended his United career winning an unprecedented treble secured his legendary status at Old Trafford.
