Wigan Athletic boss Martinez receives apology from Riley
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has received a call from referees' chief Mike Riley to apologise for mistakes made by officials during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea.
Both of the home side's goals at Stamford Bridge appeared to be offside.
After the game Martinez branded some of the officiating "disgusting", but has since mellowed and praised Riley's actions in contacting the club.
"It is a very honourable way to face mistakes," Martinez said.
A former top-flight referee, Riley now heads Professional Game Match Officials Limited, an organisation that provides officials for the Premier League, as well as co-ordinating assessments of referees' performances.
"Mike Riley told me that he understands that with the level of refereeing in this league [officials] should get those calls right," the Spaniard revealed.
"We were unfortunate at the weekend and we've had a few bad calls over the season. There are many other clubs that have had them as well. It's important that we don't feel too aggrieved; that's part of the game and we need to accept it.
"In many ways the luck is going to level out.
"This is why the game is such a controversial subject between all of us, because good and bad calls are part of the game."
Wigan are 19th in the Premier League but are level on points with Blackburn and QPR above them and are only in the relegation zone on goal difference.
The Latics picked up eight points in March and Martinez is keen for the recent improved form to continue in the run-in.
"I don't want to keep talking about those [refereeing errors]," he said. "They stopped a positive result for us but it was the performance that allowed us to be in the position where we could get a positive result.
"We have a group that is used to facing adversity and a group that will maintain their level to the end of the season."

That offside goal, at first I thought wtf....it looked legitimate. A few more replays and it shows the wigan player not going for the ball but backing into de gea. And then he raised his hands right after the ball went in. Why raise his hands to declare innocence if he didn't do it? lol
If you are running for the ball and accidentally blocking the keeper, I think that's fine. Anyway, Utd look ragged. Hope they come back stronger in the 2nd half. Me thinks there will be a utd late goal. Let's wait and see heh.

I always knew this was a bad time to play Wigan as they have been hard done by the referee in their previous match against chelsea where 2 offside goals against them wasn't called.
So i was worried they the referee would give them more in return from this match. It's true wigan played well but their goal came from a corner that shouldn't even have been at all and United had 2 very good moments to be given penalties which was strangely not given.
I guess the ref was afraid of making them more angry.

wigan are really the escape artist of the premiership. this is the 3rd season they're fighting relegation isnt it?

I had a bad feeling united will lose to wigan last night and so united lost. nvm, from 8 points cut to 5 points, still a substantial lead, can still afford to lose to city on 30 April and still lead 2 points if all things being equal. its city title to lose from last month and its now united's title to lose. if united were to lose the title, what a turnaround in fortunes indeed.

I see two positives in this loss.
1) SAF will definitely use this loss as a wake up call to the players. I fear the worst for the next opponent at OT.
2) There will be pressure on Man city as well. They are 5 points away and they know they need to keep up with united. So its good that Man city will have some pressure playing their matches.
I felt that the last substitute used by SAF is a wrong decision. He play nani and replace rooney.
At that point of time, i feel he could sub nani in and take out evans. Evans is on a yellow card. Taking him out, and play jones to the centre. Bring valencia to right back and nani on the right. Rooney is a game changing player. He should have stayed.
Wrong decision.

Having said all that, I think wigan deserve all 3 points.
Man utd need to remember, the title is won over, not handed over.

United cannot afford going into their last game away to Sunderland needing a win to seal the title as it won't happen. Sunderland won't be easy. So I believe they can get 6 points from 2 of their home matches with the Everton one in the balance.
Away to City and Sunderland will be important matches. But City will still have a little difficult match away to Norwich, but the one that stands out is the away to Newcastle one. City is still very much in this title race even though Mancini said they are finished. As now, they won't be feeling as much pressure as previously...
