  NEWCASTLE and QPR are battling to sign Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on loan.

  The Italian striker is behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov, Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen in the Old Trafford pecking order.

  Macheda was loaned to Sampdoria in January but failed to impress during his spell in Serie A as the club were relegated from Italy's top flight.

  But although United boss Alex Ferguson is reluctant to let the 20-year-old leave on a permanent deal, he is open to farming him out to a Premier League rival so Macheda can gain experience.

  Macheda's agent Giovanni Bia said: "Macheda will not return to Italy. Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League.

  "At this time, Newcastle have the edge over Queens Park Rangers."

  Never send him out on loan, wasted...

  He could have gain some much needed experience on playing in the premier league like Welbeck... Now he will just sit around and play more Carling cup matches at most...
