  Manchester United, the champions, host a Blackpool side scrapping for survival. The hosts are aiming to go through the entire season unbeaten at home, while the visitors are looking to pick up their first victory at Old Trafford in 49 years. It hardly helps their cause that Sir Alex Ferguson has said he will field a strong team, but Ian Holloway's men could still lose and stay up – and therefore play in the Premier League for a second successive season – should Birmingham, away at Tottenham, lose by a bigger margin.

  EDWIN VAN DER SAR admits he is dreading his final league game at Old Trafford. Alex Ferguson's men take on relegation-threatened Blackpool, with the retiring Dutchman due to be handed the captain's armband.

   

  The 40-year-old has revealed he did not even start thinking about the prospect of life after football until a couple of weeks ago. But the enormity of it has now started to sink in, making tomorrow's occasion all the more difficult.

  He said: "I am not looking forward to it.

  "It is a sad moment. You don't look forward to those. I just have to make the best of it.

  "I wouldn't say it has come round quickly. I had not really been thinking about it. Once I knew what I was going to do, I remained focussed on the games and the training.

  "It is only in the last two weeks that it has really sunk in that I am running out of time.

  "Hopefully though, the memories I will get this weekend I will be able to keep with me for the rest of my life."

  Van der Sar still has a big job to do.

  Next week he will be gearing up for an incredible fifth Champions League final, hoping to keep out a Barcelona side that spoiled his night in Rome by beating him twice a couple of years ago.

  Fans of Wigan, Birmingham, Wolves and Blackburn will cheering Van der Sar on against Blackpool.

  And United veteran Paul Scholes admits he would be sad if the Seasiders went down — because the league would miss their manager.

  He said: "Ian Holloway's press conferences are brilliant.

  "Listening to what he has to say is something to look forward to on a Friday afternoon.

  "He has been great for Blackpool. The way they have approached the season is a breath of fresh air.

  "They want to come out and score goals and even against us, I am sure they won't just try to sneak the odd goal and defend."

  MICHAEL OWEN could play his final game for Manchester United against Blackpool today – with Sir Alex Ferguson committed to Danny Welbeck next season.

  The Old Trafford boss would have trouble finding a role for Owen next year, as he rewards striker Welbeck, 20, for an impressive loan spell at Sunderland, where he scored six league goals.

  The Black Cats would like England Under-21 forward Welbeck to return – but Ferguson wants him in his squad and may sacrifice Owen, whose two-year contract has come to an end.

  Ferguson also has the problem of what to do with Italian Federico Macheda, who went on loan to Sampdoria in January, but had difficulty making an impact.

  Sampdoria have gone down to Serie B and Ferguson will speak with the striker, 19, after the Champions League final.
