As revealed in SunSport, Manchester United made a move to land the Goodison midfielder in January.
But the Merseysiders asked them to come back in the summer as he was so vital to them for the rest of the season.
They also told United their initial £15m offer was nowhere near enough.
Rodwell, 20 yesterday, is one of the most sought-after Premier League youngsters and signed a new five-year Everton deal only last May.
But United chief Ferguson is so keen to land him he has persuaded the club's owners, the Glazer family, to up their offer substantially at the end of the season.
United have committed another £15m to a double swoop for Aston Villa forward Ashley Young, 25, and their 21-year-old defender Ciaran Clark.
Fergie, who faces Arsenal in the FA Cup today, also wants striker Danny Welbeck, 20, and midfielder Tom Cleverley, 21, back permanently when they end their loans at Sunderland and Wigan.
It will be good if the move is proven to be true. Looks like Fergie is moulding United into an England Squad. What's next? Jordan Henderson?
At least another 5 more years at the top for utd? I hope so :)
The next generation of Fergie's Flegdlings?
25m, quite a pricey purchases, if it goes through..
this chap got potential to be a world class midfielder if he does join United. he can be a long term replacement for scholes. If Joe Henderson comes, it will be great too, as he will be replacement for hargreaves long term too.

hmm, initially when he was mentioned, he was touted as Rio's successor (if I am not wrong), never as scholes' replacement. I think he will be MF general MU needs aka Keano's mould. and Joe Henderson is more the creative one, or I got the roles reversed?
