Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies has claimed Manchester United are interested in signing goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for a replacement for Edwin van der Saar with the 40-year-old Dutchman retiring at the end of the season.
Neuer is Germany's number one and, at 24, already one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Europe.
Tonnies told the Bild newspaper: "An international agent approached me and informed me that Manchester United are interested in Neuer.
"If Manchester United make a written inquiry then we will deal with it."
Neuer's contract with the Royal Blues expires next year and there would be no shortage of suitors should he choose to move on.
Bayern Munich are long-standing admirers and coach Louis van Gaal on Tuesday openly declared his interest in the player.
He's really good, reminds me of a young Cech before he was out concussed in that fateful Reading match.
