Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is being watched closely by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to bolster his striking options.
It is believed that the Red Devils manager is looking for one more striker as questions marks remain over some of his current roster and The Metro believe Fergie sees Carroll as the missing link.
As Goal exclusively revealed last week, Ferguson is likely to face competition for the striker if he decides to make a move in January.
While Dimitar Berbatov leads the Premier League scoring charts, Ferguson is reportedly keen to strengthen, as England star Wayne Rooney continues to misfire after his return from injury, and Michael Owen is expected to leave in January, or the summer.
In terms of other options, Javier Hernandez has impressed but is not yet an automatic first team choice, while Federico Macheda is still untried and has been linked with moves back to Italy.
United manager Ferguson is also expected to be given £50 million to spend over the course of the next year and remains among the favourites to capture the troubled striker.
United has too many strikers on its books. for him to come, would need to release owen at season's end and sell diouf and maybe macheda or wellbeck.
