Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, 40, is retiring in the summer.
The Germany international's contract with the Bundesliga club expires in 2012, and there have been suggestions that the 26-year-old could make a move away from the club.

It is thought that Sir Alex Ferguson may be prepared to step up his interest, as United may be unable to match Chelsea and Manchester City in terms of financial muscle during the summer.
Sweinsteiger is currently placed 140th in the Castrol Rankings with 667 ranking points, compared with 112th a month earlier.
This guy play what position? Though he may be quite a good player, Where does he fit in at United?
he can play behind the strikers or be deployed as a winger. But he seems to be good only when playing for germany.
I think he's more of Lampard-type of player, roaming all across midfield, comfortable on both feet and pack a punch on long range shots.
At 12m, I think he's a steal and Sweinsteiger could spark some fresh ideas in attack.

an AM.. but with so many big fishes, 12m is quite optimistic..
he sure sounds like tiger beer lol.
He gd
attack and defensive
If his strongest position is right wing, then United don't really need him cos they currently have Nani and Valencia will be back too in Feb. But the thing here is, both this players are more better on the right too though Nani can still play on the left. But putting him there is like a big waste of his talent...
Then there is Giggs, Park and Obertan too... Better to get a proper left winger rather than a right one and play him on the left...
Lolx actually
Fergie can put him on Central Mid
but would also wasted coz gt carrick/fletcher..
wah i miss valencia....when's he coming back?

good question, I did a search and it seems none.
what about when's a german in the EPL? top of head, I can think of hamnan and that guy who played for west ham..
else, I can't rem any.

i hope he fully recovers, mentally and physically.
from what alan smith said, it seems there will be some degradation (physically), hopefully, valencia is young and able to recover fully. fingers-crossed.

Actually, I don't get the point he's trying to make.
Park is United's first Korean signing, Dong Fang Zhuo is the first Chinese, Manucho the first Angolian, Valencia the first Ecadorian, Ronaldo is the first Portugese, Chicharito the first Mexican and the list goes on and on.
So what is with this "Not gonna happen cos he's a German" thing?
There's a Michael Ballack, Jurgen Klinsmann, Thomas Hitzlsperger and many more big name German players who are/used to ply trade in EPL too.

maybe, he is just co-relating the fact that MUFC has not gotten any germans players since day one and hence, it won't happen due to this. a big "Maybe"??
but as correctly pointed out by you, there are many germans now in EPL, and almost all leagues have many international players.
And I forgot to mention Markus Babbel (Liverpool) and Jens Lehmann too.
But then again, I doubt Fergie would go for him. He seems to be more interested in getting a keeper and I belive Lindegaard is bought to replace Kuszczak / remind Kuszczak that no one is irreplaceable. I think the next deal would be De Gea.
Coupled with the option of recalling Cleverley, United midfield will be packed unless there are departures coming up.
hey mario basler also played in EPL before right? for spurs or dunno who.
