Sir Alex Ferguson isn’t sure what to expect from United’s opponents Wigan at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Reds boss has identified the Latics as an inconsistent outfit, which is reflected in their patchy league form this season.
But he believes they are slowly shaking off that tag thanks to the belief that opposite number Roberto Martinez has instilled into his side.
"I think he gets the rewards by sticking to his philosophy," said Sir Alex on Friday.
"He sticks by what he believes in and that’s good. It shows he has strong management and I think his players now believe in him too.
"There is a bit of inconsistency about them but they are capable. They beat Tottenham at their place, had a good result against West Brom and drew with Liverpool."
History is without doubt on United’s side in this fixture: the Reds have won all 11 previous meetings with Wigan, including the 2006 Carling Cup final. But Sir Alex is taking nothing for granted, such is the competitive nature of this season’s Premier League.
"There are surprise results coming about. We saw some evidence of that last season and it has been the same this season," he said.
"People make a story about us being undefeated, but we’ve thrown points away, whereas last week [at Aston Villa] we stole a point." -
