Victory against Wolves and the United manager will record his longest undefeated start to a season since succeeding Ron Atkinson on November 6, 1986.
Scholes: Wolves can hurt us
Paul Scholes is expecting Wolves to attack United on Saturday, just as they did 12 days ago in the Carling Cup fourth round.
The Reds beat Mick McCarthy’s side 3-2 but had to work hard for the victory against an extremely resilient outfit. Although Scholes didn't feature in that match, he is fully aware of the threat Wolves pose and is anticipating an equally positive approach this weekend.
“I know they haven’t had the best of starts this season but they’ve got players who can hurt you,” Scholes said. “They showed they are capable of scoring goals at Old Trafford – they managed two – and I’m sure they’ll have a go on Saturday as well.”
The 35-year-old Reds midfielder also shrugged off suggestions that Wolves are an overly aggressive side, claiming teams simply employ different styles of play.
“There are some teams that might not play the most attractive football but you have to find a way of winning games,” Scholes added.
“Their managers want to get the best out of them and find the best way of winning games and they do it their own way. It’s up to us to be able to play against that and find a way of winning.
"I think over the years, especially when we’ve played Arsenal, we'd had to try and be aggressive and get about them because they’ll pass the ball around you otherwise. I don’t think it’s any different to what teams do [against us]."
Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher could run out against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, but Nani is facing a battle to be fit for the Manchester derby.
United's assistant manager Mike Phelan delivered the team news at the Reds' Carrington training base as Sir Alex Ferguson has been struck down with a virus, similar to the one that caused a number of players to miss the midweek trip to Turkey.
Darron Gibson appears hardest hit and definitely won't feature against Wolves, while Phelan said "one or two others" did not train on Friday and will be assessed on the morning of the match.
Veteran winger Giggs has been out of action since United drew 2-2 with West Bromwich Albion on 16 October after aggravating a hamstring strain but is now back in training.
"Ryan's started his preparation for the matches, but whether he'll be available on Saturday, we're not quite sure just yet," Phelan said. "We'll assess that in training."
Fletcher, who rolled his ankle during Tuesday's 3-0 win against Bursaspor, has shown "positive signs that he could recover". Phelan added: "We'll have another look at him this morning and hopefully he'll be available."
There was less positive news for Nani. The Portuguese winger suffered a groin strain and was forced off at the Ataturk Stadium in Bursa. He won't be fit to face Wolves, but could return for Wednesday's crucial clash with Manchester City.
"There's a possibility Nani will play against City," says Phelan. "He reported in yesterday and felt better than he expected. We'll progress him as quickly as we can with a view to having him play next week."
Wolves' visit to Old Trafford in the Carling Cup fourth round produced a see-sawing five-goal thriller. Reds defender John O’Shea wasn’t involved that night, but the Irishman looked on admiringly as the visitors showed no fear and took the game to United.
Mick McCarthy's men will return to M16 on Saturday full of confidence after beating high-flying Manchester City last weekend, although O'Shea isn't convinced Wolves be quite so adventurous this time around.
“It’s rare teams come here and attack us, so you have to give credit to Mick McCarthy for that approach,” O’Shea said. “But I think they’ll be a little more cautious today as they tend to play 4-5-1 in the league. But a 4-5-1 can turn into a 4-3-3 very easily if the wide men get involved and we'll need to watch out for that.”
One of those wide men is left winger Matt Jarvis, who was arguably the star performer when United and Wolves met that evening.
“He’s very good and very quick,” O’Shea said of the 24-year-old. “Wolves did well to bring him into the game so much. You could tell they’d worked hard at creating scenarios to get him one against one with a defender.
“Some people have been pushing to see him in an England shirt, which shows just how much potential he has. He’s a major asset for Wolves.”

he need to retire lo...
I think its because of the viruses affecting a few players, fergie risked hargreaves and it failed to pay off. might as well release him lar, because he clearly cannot play top level football anymore cos of his injuries.
fergie is obviously have an eye with the clash with man city in mind. if united still struggle in the second half, scholes may be called upon to play.
no nani no valencia, no width at all.
united is struggling to break down wolves defence. scholes will surely be called upon to play in the second half de and macheda too if by then united do not score.
wolves is dominating the proceedings at OT!!!
With this kind of play, I can see us struggling to get a draw, never mind a win.

Jarvis a definite threat man...Brown not exactly containing him well either.
Bebe could try giving him more support.
I hope Fergie brings Scholes on later, he'll bring some calm to United's passing. They've been rushing play and losing possession quite cheaply on a couple of occasions already.
