Manchester United are set to spend £12 million on Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour in January, according to TalkSport.
The 22-year-old is wanted by Sir Alex Ferguson as Owen Hargreaves continues to struggle in his battle with chronic knee injuries.
Hargreaves hasn't started a game for two years and Defour is seen as a natural replacement for the England international.
Goal.com UK exclusively revealed on Saturday that Ferguson has been assured of a £50 million transfer kitty by the Glazer family, and Defour is reportedly his first target.
Defour has been linked with several top European clubs for some time, but it appears Ferguson is ready to take the plunge in January, with Standard apparently open to offers.
Defour, who has already played 24 times for his country, would be expected to jump at the chance of a move to Old Trafford.
its about time that hargreaves leave.25 games in 3 seasons, gee.....
but I rather fergie go buy sneider or kaka lol.
Owen H should retired lar
Defour also not bad what, can groom abit.
sad for Hargreaves' plight. He was really 2nd best MC we had in the team after Scholes..But is it a case of karma?...remember how he forced Bayern the transfer to united

-->>Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Defour's signing would be good but correct me if i'm wrong, he's a defensive midfielder?
Maybe Hargreaves and Carrick should leave. The supposed-England B Team Central Midfielders are nothing but wasted money.
Whatever happens, Hargreaves isn't finish yet... Anyway, even if he is, his contribution shouldn't be written off so easily... Some people have short memories and while we talk about the great job Ronaldo, Vidic, Scholes etc have all done, we should also remember how he played against Arsenal and Barcelona in order for United to win the Premier League and Champions League in that same year...
Even if today, if anyone ask me would you buy a player for $17m and he can play only so few matches but you would win the league and CL, would you be interested?
I wouldn't even hesitate to take it anyday...
Hargreaves has done well for United and I know football is a team sport but without him in those matches, The ground he covered against the free scoring Barce and the free-kick he scored against Arsenal, United's double might not have happen...

yes, his contribution is immense, but the lingering question, can he still do it when he is back?
look @ Gary Neville after his comback? he is a pale shadow.
i believe all MU fans will welcome OwenH playing on the field again, but how long more?

Target: Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour is wanted by United
Manchester United target Steven Defour - the man Sir Alex Ferguson sent a get well telegram last year - admits he is ready to leave Belgium and seal a dream move to Old Trafford.
The Belgium international is a long-term target for Sir Alex Ferguson, who is understood to have been handed a substantial transfer kitty to boost his squad after Wayne Rooney questioned club's ambition last week.
Ferguson sent Defour - who has also been linked with Liverpool - a personal message last year when the talented midfielder suffered a serious foot injury playing for Standard Liege.
Defour had previously remained tight-lipped on United - but the 22-year-old has finally admitted he is aware of interest from Old Trafford.
And Defour says he is ready to leave Standard Liege, he said: 'I know that Manchester United are closely monitoring my situation. There hasn't been any official contact yet though.
'I've been sidelined for quite a while due to injury, but I'm playing at a high level again. The chance that I'll leave the club is rather big if I continue to play like I currently do.
Keeping an eye on you: The letter Sir Alex Ferguson sent to Defour after his injury
'I've had the opportunity to leave Standard on more than once occasion in the past couple of seasons, but I loved the club too much to leave. However, I'm 22 years old now and I also have to think about myself.
'There comes a time when you just have to make the next step in your career, regardless of sentiments for any club.'

I am not questioning whether he can still play well when he do make a comeback, that is still left to be seen...
All I said was don't belittle his contribution during their winning campaign...
For all we know, this Steven Defour or some other DM could actually be to replace Anderson rather and Hargreaves...

Fergie has something for half-crocked players eh?
RVN, Hargreaves and M.Owen.
I can't recall if Saha was injury prone before joining Utd?
